Hi all,

I was looking to get a 2002-04 911/996. But after doing some research, I was scared by the potential engine problems. Now I am thinking about the Boxster with the 2.7 engine, which seems to be much more reliable.

What years are good for the Boxster? As I understand the Boxster S has the same engine as the 996 so it is out of question for me. What other potential issues/areas I should look out for the Boxster.

BTW, I drive a 2005 BMW 330ci convertible now and wanted something that handles and drives better. Am I asking too much? LOL

Thanks for your advice!

The 2.7L engine is still an M96, exactly same as the “S” or a 911 variant; it is just in a Boxster. That said, if you can find a car (996, 986, and 987) built 2005 or earlier, you can up grade the IMS and prevent any further issues.

Thanks. I didn't know that.

Would a 2007-08 Boxter 2.7L free of the IMS problem?

No, if anything, the issue is worse as they went to a large diameter IMS bearing which still fails, but cannot be replaced without total disassembly of the engine.
