I have an oil level sensor fault. The display just flashes on startup. Book says its the sensor but I've already replaced this. Next possible cause is cluster.

My car is 2002 Boxster S manual six speed. Part number on my cluster is 986 641 217 01 EOD.

A Porsche breaker has two units, p/n 986 641 217 02 FHB from a 2003 3.2S 6 speed manual and 986 641 217 00 EOD from a 2000 3.2S six speed manual.

Can anyone please advise if these units would be ok.

Either one should work

Remember you will need a PST2 or PIWIS tester to transfer the settings.

Thanks Loren. I should get part in a couple of days. My plan is to remove suspect cluster and plug in replacement part and then turn key in ignition to see if oil level check cycle runs. If this is successful I'll refit original part and take car to Dashfixer depot to get settings put right.

I've got a recent diagnostic printout will this have all the information I need to set up replacement cluster?

This might be stupid question, but do I need to disconnect the battery before removing cluster connectors or can I do it on the fly?

Well if you want it to match then you will need to do a transfer using one of the Porsche testers. Depending on your laws there you may have to get a signed certification of the cars true mileage if and when you sell the car.

Cluster with over 52 miles (60 Km) can not be re-programmed with the Porsche testers - although I have heard some 3rd party instrument shops can do this. If you go the 3rd party route then be sure they certify it.

So far so good. Replacement cluster connected and now showing oil level and countdown cycle. Will put it all back together and take it for a spin.
