I have seen conflicting information regarding replacing the clutch on the 997. I have seen some posts where the engine and gearbox need to be lowered at the same time, others where you can just lower the gearbox. Before I get elbows deep, I want to make sure that I can reach all of the bolts for the 997. Has anyone seen a link for a DIY or how to? If not I will take pictures and post how to perform this, but before I start I want to make sure that it is not mission impossible? Thanks !

Car is a 997 carrera 3.8 manual transmission (obviously) LOL 34,000 miles

Its blue, not sure if that adds to the difficulty!

IMHO... the easiest (and fastest way) to replace the clutch is to put the car on a lift. Support the engine and then remove the transmission.

Then do all your clutch flywheel work and inspect the IMS and RMS.

There sure looks like very little room to

work on the nuts on the top of the transmission.

Post some pictures.

Thats what has got me concerned. I dont have a lift (yet) but I can get the vehicle high enough in the air to perfrom the job. I also have all of the lowering lifts for the transmission. On the 996, it didnt appear that difficult, but I am not sure if the top bolts are accessible. I am going to dig into it tomorrow evening to see if I can get to them.

Thanks!

I need to get a lift......

@ PAULSPEED Tiptronic gearboxes, manufacture of M.B., can not be removed separately without occasional accidents. Manual gearboxes are no problem with the gearbox mount removed and a slight inclination downwards of the engine-gearbox combination, the top bolts are accessible than.

According to the online manual you can tilt the lump down about 25 mm IIRC which gives acces to the bolts.

Hope you have support equipment!

Has anyone chimed in about the DIY link? Is there one? A shop here quoted 4000 to change the clutch. And the car only has 18k on it!!! First owner must have lived on a hill or was of the other persuasion... ;)

Replacing the clutch in the 996 is basically the same as the 997, and there are plenty of write ups. In addition to being very similar to the procedure laid out on the 996 work shop manual. There is another very recent thread discussing the same topic.

About to do the clutch on a 2007 997 S. I cant find the clutch tool anywhere. NOWHERE.

Can someone verify the 996 tool will work exactly the same?

Does anyone need any pics of this DIY since there isnt one for 997??

Read the diy link for the 996.

Anyone know where to buy a triple square bit for that weird bolt?

Does someone have a pic from the manual of the bell housing so I can see where the other bolts are?
