My 99 996 drinks about 1 bottle of synthetic almost every month. Doesn't seem to be normal for me. But the engine still runs strong and doesn't seem to have any problem.

Can anyone tell me something about 996's oil consumption and what are things that I am missing?

Peter Smith once told me what Porsche considers normal. I think it was 1 quart per 600 miles or 1 liter per 1,000 kilometers. I would not be happy if my car used that much oil, or a quart a month unless I drove 15,000 miles a month.

I change the Boxster oil every 15,000 miles and do not add oil in between changes, but I am about a quart low when it is time for the change. But I think I burn less oil than most other owners.

My engine is dry and clean from outside. I guess I have to start measuring the oil level regularly to see what exactly it drinks.

Thanks guys.

It is not normal, but I understand very COMMON. As long as you maintain the proper oil level, it should not pose a problem. However, regardless of what Porsche or other's say, the engine is NOT designed to burn oil. 45,000 miles on my engine and never add any oil between changes.

Horizontal 6 engines are a bit different than your V6 or I6. I think due to the layout they can be more prone to ring leakage. Do non know exactly why but seems to be the case. For example the cloud that a lot of people notice on startup. Also break in procedure, as in all engines, can determine how well the rings are seated and consequenly subsequent oil consumption.
