I have a problem with the idle on my 1999 Carrera. When i start it for the first time in the morning it revs up to 1800-2000 real quick and then goes down to about 800-1000, it does this only when it´s cold. Also when i stop, the idle is at about 1100-1200 for a couple of seconds and then goes down to 800-900.

The idle is stable and does not fluctuate.

I have cleaned the throttle body and the ICV.

I´m thinking about buying a new ICV but it´s so **** expensive so i would like to know what you think before i buy it.

Does the valve move freely? If not, you don't have much choice but to replace it. Sometimes the solenoid goes bad too - and then the valve doesn't move at all.

I can move the little flap in the valve and it seems to be moving like it should.

Is there any way to test if the solenoid is broken? Will it show if i plugg in the PIWIS?

You might be able to activate it with a PST2 or PIWIS but I doubt it will tell you it moved - I don't know how it would know. You will likely need to observe it when activated.

If it does not move you know you have your problem.

I HAD MINE OFF LAST WEEK AS I WAS CLEANING THROTTLE BODY ON THE WORKBENCH. SIMPLY CONNECTING A 9VOLT BATTERY TO THIS DEVICE WHILE IT WAS OFF THE THROTTLE BODY ,I WAS ABLE TO SEE THE "GATE" OPENING AND CLOSING

Ok i have tested the ICV with a 9V battery and it open and close so i suppose it works like it should.

You can cycle it (open/closed every second) with a Durametric so you can see if it's working or not. I was able to disassemble the solenoid pretty easily and a good cleaning did the trick for mine. There's a little pin that holds it together that can be pushed out carefully.

Ok i have some things that i think could be the problem:

1. ICV? I have tested the valve with a 9 v battery and the flap opens and closes freely

2. AOS? I have not noticed any oil residue in the throttle housing. Is there any other check i could do to be certain?

3.Throttle valve switch 996 606 116 00? How do i test it ?

4. Tire size? I have read about it in a thread that the wrong tire size could affect the Traction control and cause the hi idle when stopping.

I have 225/40 18" and 285/30 18"

Try cleaning your throttle body and your MAF.

I don't think it's the tire size. That doesn't affect idle when you're stopped or at speeds under 10 mph.

A little update:

I unplugged the MAF, started the car and the hi reving was gone, it vent up to about 1800rpm and back again. So i finally thought i had found the problem but just to be shure i let it sit over night and started it with the MAF connected, i got the same result, it only reved up to 1800rpm!

So maybe it was some bad connection or somthing.

New update:

It was not a bad connection the problem still remained. I changed the MAF and the problem did´nt go away so i had the dealer check it with the computer. The car had a vaccum leak and it was a smal pipe that was not connected, easy to fix and now the car is running as it should.

For the life of me,  I cannot tell where this shot was taken from in the engine bay.  I have same problem on my 99.

 

can you clarify where this broken tube was?
