2006 Boxster S

5 Speed Manual

US

The battery is totally dead and I am going to replace it. I am worried about losing engine/security/radio codes during this process (or perhaps I already have with the dead battery??). Have read elsewhere that losing a Cam timing code in the engine would be a really bad thing. Do I need to be concerned or can I just go ahead and swap out the battery? Thanks, sorry if this is a silly question but I don't want to create problems for myself.

In general, most Boxsters do not experience dire problems from disconnecting the battery, most of the real issues are with 911 variants, with the obvious exception of Boxsters running the dash clusters out of 911's. That said, you can use a good quality maintainer like the Ctek that has a "supply" setting mode which will keep voltage on the system while removing the battery. If you use one, just remember that your + battery cable will remain "hot" while disconnected, so do not short it to ground..............

Many thanks JFP!!!

Could I achieve the same results by hooking up a "spare" battery via the fuse box post while I am swapping out the batteries? (I don't have a battery maintainer, but do have another 12V car battery (not for the Boxster) that I could connect in that fashion.)

Any recommendations on replacement battery Brand/Model? The OEM battery seems to have really low CCA at 380? I do know I need to either get a replacement that vents left end of battery or an adapter kit.

Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated.

You can do this with a second battery, just be careful, 12V batteries carry one Hell of a lot of amperage and tend to be unforgiving ..........

As for the battery, check out Mike Focke's website, he covers your options in detail. Myself, I'm an Optima fan (sealed, requires no venting), currently running four of them, one of which is approaching its 10th birthday.............

I would just go ahead an replace it and not be concerned. The battery in my 07 987s is disconnected all winter while in storage with no issues for the past 3 years. I also replaced the battery last spring and didn't do anything to maintain voltage. If the windows don't work in auto mode just lower them all the way and raise them back up manually. They should be reset. One time there was a error code that prevented the window from working properly in auto mode, the dealer reset it.
