Smoke on Stat Up 1999 996

I get a white/gray smoke on startup. It lasts about 5 to 10 seconds then goes away. It does not smoke any other time. It has the typical strong exhaust smell. is this normal or sign of something bad coming? It is a 1999 996 C2 Tiptronic

First, all "flat six" engines are prone to the occasional puff of smoke on a cold start, this is normal. If the smoke always occurs on start, or is particularly heavy, you may have another issue such as the AoS going south on you. If it is the AoS, it needs to be addressed before it totally craps out and hydraulics the engine, which is both a real possibility and always fatal......

Do you hear a high pitched whine during start-up that lasts maybe 45 seconds?

My boxster does this -- and if I drive off before waiting for it to stop -- I get a secondary air injection failure withing a couple miles.

I haven't dug into it yet -- been busy with other projects.

No whine, just a short smoking and then stops.

If it does it almost everytime i agree with JFP. AOS failure
