I'm a little disappointed by the exhaust sound on my stock '99 996. I only got the car a few months ago and I love the car and the performance. However the exhaust sound simply doesn't do the car justice and based on all the forum topics related to this it seems to be a common observation. I live on a Caribbean Island, and am lucky to drive 20 miles a day, so I don't really want to do the full $5000 exhaust replacement job. Instead I was thinking of getting the Fister modified muffles along with an air intake kit. Is this combination likely to give me a nice noise boost and if not what else should I consider? Thanks.

Not sure what your emissions laws are there but the biggest restriction in the exhaust is the cats. It's fairly cheap to purchase cat eliminator pipes and that will give you a substantial boost in noise even with a stock system. Regardless of how you handle the exhaust you may need a flash or post cat O2 SIMMS to insure no CEL's.

I am thinking about some changes in my exhaust system also ---- what are SIMMS????

Thanks,

I've got the Cargraphic exhaust with the BMC Cold Air Induction kit. Completely transforms the car, absolutely huge change from stock. I think the cheapest mod is the Fister mod with the CAI. Maybe $500?

This the mod i did some years ago & they sound great. Basically it,s the same a genuine sports exhaust from porsche but without the valve & actuator. Only problem with this mod is it can be a bit too much if you do long runs.

I've had my Fister mufflers for almost two years now. By far, the best mod I've done. Sounds like a pcar should, especially with the top down!

It was a nice sunny day in the great white north (+10C) and I installed my FD modified mufflers and started it up.

It sounds great. With all the negative comments I've heard about some aftermarket exhausts I was pleasantly surprised.

Best thing I've done to my car in the 4 years I've owned it.

Has anyone tried FVD, RUF or other brand muffler besides Fister? I heard some of those brands are good too.

I'm looking to do the same very soon. I have an 01 996. i was actually leaning toward Fabspeed. High quality and bolts right onto the car. i'll keep watching this thread for comments.

I did a similar modification to my stock cans as shown in post#9. Inexpensive, excellent exhaust note, no drone, not excessive during normal acceleration, does not need a computer reflashing, does not cause a CEL illumination. And it was cheap and easy!

Sounds awesome when you are really on it after about 3500 rpms!
