Hi, Is there anyway of telling what model car a instrument cluster came from by the part number?

I want to know if 996.641.981.77.70C is going to be a suitable replacement for my 2002 Boxster S.

I've been told its off a Porsche 996 Carrera 4S 2003 but they are not sure if a convertable or not. Thanks

The later cluster will work on all cars C2/C4/ convertible coupe, they are just encoded differently via the PST2/PIWIS. This is in contrast to the early cars where the C2 and C4 had a different cluster. The part you list is correct for a 2002-on C2/C4/C4S in GB with a tiptronic trans. If your Boxster has a tiptronic, this will work for you with recoding, regardless of the car it was originally installed in.

I think 996.641.981.77.70C is for a MY02 - on Carrera with manual (6 speed) transmission (M480).

Todd is right - there is no difference (other than Tiptronic lights) in the later clusters -- it's all programming.

If your intent is to use this in a Boxster then you will first have to program it as a Carrera Cabriolet (for the top light etc to work) and also add the wire (and sender) for the oil temperature.
