I am stuck in the middle of my wheel bearing replacement job, I have everything disconnected and the wheel hub assembly is completely disconnected but I can't figure out how to remove the parking brake line assembly thats stuck inside the hub. I've tried everything, the tube in the back that holds the line does not turn so I do not know where to go or what to take off so that the line is detached..please help!!

Remove the rear rotor and disconnect the parking brake cable at the internal brake shoe mechanism.

In Loren's picture, part numbers 7, 8 and 9 are like a little hinge. You pry the shoes apart a little so you can open the hinge at the bottom of the assembly. Number 9 is held in by an E clip - you pull that clip off, and remove the hinge pieces, and the hand brake cable with now slide out the tube on the back of the wheel carrier.

You may have to give yourself some slack on the cable from in the car by loosening the the cables under the tray floor. in order to have the room to remove the e clip.

Just did this job last Friday. The cable simply feeds through the back of the wheel carrier. There is no locking mechanism. Just release the cable from the ratchet piece (the peice between the brake shoes at the bottom of the hub), by removing circlip at the top of the pin and pull the pin downward out of the cable end. Once the cable is free from the ratchet mechanism, just pull (and twist slightly) the cable out of the back of the wheel carrier.

The fun is when you get to put it all back together. Do you have the pictures from Glyn? Glyn's tutorial has very nice pictures of the parking brake assembly.

Pry out part #10 . Parts 7 and 8 in the diagram are attached to each other and do not need to be seperated. The right hole on part #7 is were the part attaches to the cable. The pin and circlip I reference are not shown in the diagram.

Thanks for the replies guys, but still doesn't target my issue. Let me elaborate- the parking brake cable is linked directly into a small metal 2 pronged fork piece, (it's the end piece of the cable) which is right after the spring and goes through a metal tube in the back of the hub assembly not displayed in the diagram, the fork cable attachment is where the hook mechanism (7,8,9 of the diagram) is attached to via a pin. The problem lies where that fork piece(I don't know what else to call it)is unable to come out through the back of the wheel hub assembly as it is to large to exit, there is a bulge in the tube that seats the fork piece.

I was able to remove the 7,8,9,10 its just the cable linkage I am having issues with, I can only see this working where the parking brake cable tube in the back of the hub is able to come off..but I've tried to remove it with no success( the top of the tube ripped off using so much force :( )

If I am not explaining clearly I can take pictures and upload them.

My other option is just cutting the cable and finishing the installation and having an indie shop do a parking brake cable installation as I saved alot of money by not having a shop do my wheel bearings and a 4 wheel strut replacement that I'm almost done with.

Best Regards!

I understand your problem and all I can tell you is that the cable does simply pull out the back of wht wheel carrier. Mine did not require excessive force to remove. Assuming you have the other suspension pieces and axle loose from the carrier, you could try tilting the carrier upward to see if that helps you with removing the cable. tried

Hi Loren,

Do you have any suggestions for the new description I gave?

post-19201-0-19483300-1290136427_thumb.j Maybe this pic will help. This is from the instructions I received from Glyn. There are two pins. One attaches the two ratchet pieces together and is not removed. The other pin attaches the entire mechanism to the cable end and is removed. Edited by dghii

Loose the cables on the handbrake lever, the cables will be longer than, pull on the parts 7 and 8, part 9 is just free of the hub and has more room to be removed (push out), the cable is free now, part 10 can stay in place.

Do the hand brake adjustment after reinstalling the brake shoes and cable this way: adjust parts 2 and 3 (hand brake adjusters) to the minimum length by turning the knurled edge, install the rotors, adjust by the knurled edge, through the specific hole in the rotors, til the rotors are blocked, turn back till the rotors turns freely, adjust the cables on the hand brake lever till the rotors are blocked, turn back till the rotors turns complete freely, repeat the procedure on the hand brake adjusters as mentioned above. Both rotors should be blocked simultaneously by 4 clicks of the hand brake lever (986/996 - NOT on 987/997) and turning freely by released lever.

Readjust if necessary.

Make sure that all the parts are installed properly and in the same way as it was.

Success.
