First off, I know that I made a mistake... Please read this knowing that I just need advice...

I just finished replacing the top on my 2000 Boxster, 2.7. It closed just fine, and it is as taught as a drum with no wrinkles.

It has a glass window, and I am very happy with the way it looks.

During the removal process, I noticed that there were two canvas straps holding the old top on... (exhausted, no longer thinking straight) I thought, "Ah! I just need to cut these off, they will be on the new top..." Please see p. 11 of the hyperlink below for a picture of the straps I'm referring to.

Top Replacement Instructions

Fast forward through hours of frustration and irritation.

During installation of the new top, I realized the mistake. I thought that I could sew the straps back together after putting the top on, but I realized that I had cut the straps too close to the rear bar (the bar just below the window that contians weatherstripping). All of that being said:

As far as I can tell, these two straps aid in pulling the top back into the space allotted for the top, so is there any chance that the top will be able to be put down without these two straps? (What If I were to support the glass window while it was going down?)

Also If you have any suggestions on what I could do to fix the problem, they would be very much appreciated.

Note: I put the original straps back on the top, just as they were before removal, so everything is where it should be.
