Excellent article covering this in the most recent issue of Excellence. Well worth the time to read. Not all trickle chargers will maintain the flow of power when the battery is disconnected so make sure you are using the proper device.

Depends upon the maintainer, not all have a "supply" setting that keeps the current on when the battery is disconnected.............

If you change the battery in a 996 while using a trickle charger will you maintain all codes?
