new member, high oil pressure

Hi all

Real happy to find this site. Maybe someone can help. Changed my oil the other day and put in 10-40 Mobil 1. My oil pressure reads 4.8 to 5 at 3K + rpm. It does drop to 3 at idle. Is this normal???

1999 911 w/72K on odometer.

Thanks all big relief.

It never read that high till after I put the 10-40 in. The reading before 3.5 to 4 at 4K rpm now stays at 5 at 2.5k rpm.

Just bought it a couple of months ago and was worried.

10-40? Porsche recommends 0-40 or 5-40.

10-40 is thicker oil... It may be causing it to run a little high! I would highly recommend draining the oil and filling with factory recommended oil!

I run 5W40 Mobil 1 and see about 1.5 bar at idle (800 rpm or thereabouts) and 2.5 to 3.0 bar at 3000 rpm when the engine is fully hot. (It pegs at 5.0 bar until the car warms up fully.)

10W40 is more viscous than Porsche recommends for the 996 and you might experience problems with the VarioCam...at least that's what I've read. If it does you'll be greeted with a CEL. If you run problem-free then fine, otherwise consider changing to 5W40.

UPDATE:

Changed oil today. I could not find 0w 40 but I did get w0-30.

It did drop my oil pressure to 4.5 at 3000 rpms and 2.0 at idle

Porsche DOES NOT recommend 30W oil period.

Approved oils are 0W - 40 and 5W - 40 and 5W - 50.

UPDATE took out the 10-30 found 10-40 and put it in today.
