Hello everyone,

I have 2000 996 C2 Tip with 181,000 miles on it ..

the brake wear light has been on for a while and i thought i need new brakes in the front

so i just change the pads, but the light (Brake Wear) stays on..

is the dealer or a porsche mechanic the only one that can turn that light off ??

The brake wear indicator(s) have worn through and require replacing.

Basically they are a plastc covered electrical wire (connected in series) which wears through just before the brake pad gets to its lower limit, thus saving metal on metal wear in the disc rotors.

Each brake has 2 wire sensors which illuminate the warning light when they are worn through - so you will have to check both front and back pads and sensors - replace as required. You probably disconnected / reconnected them when you replaced the front pads.

They are a Porsche spare part and are available from any supplier.....

Yes and no. Sure you can turn off the light. But...

You can disconnect the battery and the light will go out and reset everything else in the dme memory including radio codes but once the sensors have 'touched down' they wear through a small filiment in the sensor head thus causing an open electrical path as Steve mentioned. As sson as you turn the car on again the brake light will come back on again. So it's really no, you can't turn off the light and make it stay that way without fixing the issue.

Think of it as you've blown a fuze and you just keep putting a new fuze in without figuring out the cause. The sensors are plug and play but you've got to take all the wheels off again to get at them unless you've got a lift or have skinny arms which I don't! If you get a deal they are $15 each or $25 at a dealer. It's a cheap safety item - so go out and buy the sensors and install them or have them installed.

You can pull the sensor out of the brake pad and cut and tape the to leads together and short the circuit that way. This means you will have to visually inspect the brakes from time to time.
