I have a 1999 Boxster 2.5. I was driving along at speed when the engine went dead. I pulled off the highway with white smoke coming from under the car. Car was transported home and instigations reviled a very burnt Variocam Solenoid on bank 2. I purchased a new solenoid and replaced the burned unit (and the engine fuses). The car ran fine but I got P1539 code. I read the manual and it states the adjuster unit has a spring under the spool that is actuated by the solenoid that needs to be seated correctly. I again removed the cam cover and checked everything out and all looked fine. I checked the wiring and all is well except - I get 12 volts on the solenoid all the time. Question - Do I need a new engine computer?? Car runs very well but I keep the revs under 3000 while the light is on.

Any advise please.

Thank you for your reply which I appreciate. I also thought and hoped it was a wiring damage problem. I disconnected the computer and checked the wiring between the computer and the solenoid plug (terminal 25 on the computer) and could not find a problem. The ohms between 25 and 54 - solenoid on bank 2 - have the same ohms between 52 and 54 -solenoid on bank 1. I am not sure what else to check.

Has anyone had a camshaft adjustment solenoid burnout? Any suggestions on how to check the computer? I have only got this one P code.

Regards,
