I have a 1999 996 c2 cabriolet. The rear lid wont open. The front latch opens, the windows go down and then nothing. You can hear hear the periodic click of something trying to happen but it never does.

hat do you think. Sounds like big time aggravation.

I have a thread without replies in the 996 DIY section. I seem to get one step further than you, check out what I wrote down and see if it might be of the same issue (i.e. manipulating 'flaps' engages the motor and cab top works, but without manipulating them into position, motor won't engage). Took me a while to diagnose it, I did the whole hydraulic fluid replacement, which was an easy 15 mins job by the way.

There is an assembly that lifts the cowl up and out of the way to allow the convertible top to go up/down. That assembly linkage has most likely failed. I had mine fail recently and it is not a cheap repair to replace this entire unit. I think I spent over $1500.00

Yes, the top mechanism in a 0996 can be "calibrated" using a PST2 or PIWIS tester - I have done it. Not sure what all it does but the top worked perfectly when it was done.
