Horn works but alarm does not chirp when armed

When I bought my MY99 Boxster the car failed inspection due to horn not working. Horn was replaced by local independent shop but there is no chirp when the alarm is armed. Any idea what is going on?

Also, I have never setoff the alarm so I'm not sure the horn works for that either. Is there a way to setoff the alarm via the key remote (like the panic button VW has on their remotes).

Your car has two different horn systems. One horn for just the alarm system and a pair (2) of horns that are used via the steering wheel press.

The alarm horn is not supposed to chirp (Porsche alarm systems) when set. If it chirps once that means one of more alarm zones are "open". If it chirps twice then that means there is a fault in the alarm system.

Your cars alarm sounds like it is working properly.

Best check the fuse and then horns (behind the front bumper) for the steering wheel activated warning horn.

Steering wheel press works fine. I'm used to getting a arming chirp with my non-Porsche cars so I assumed it did too.

Will try arming the alarm with one of the doors open and see if it chirps then.

A single chirp means that at least one zone is open. It can not be programmed to chirp.

As suggested above - some folks leave the armrest ajar for a chirp.

I have gotten into the habit of looking at the sensor at the base of the windshield to make sure it's flashing.

I can hear the "thunk" as the car locks, and usually glance back to see the turn signals flash.

Come on, it's a Porsche, if you don't look back every time you walk away, you need to sell it and get a Kia, you have no soul.

You all do that the turn signals flash when you lock and unlock the car. That's all the visual confirmation I need.

I like the chirp. So I just disconnected the switch that goes to the armrest. I couldn't care less whether the armrest is latched or not, and don't understand why Porsche thought this was important.

Yes, and if the alarm chirp told you whether the glove compartment or armrest was locked when the top was down, that would be useful.

But it does not. It simply let's you know if it is latched - which isn't any better than unlatched if it is unlocked. Therefore, it's useless.

Actually, it does; the compartment cannot be locked unless it is first closed....................

Well, it's a pretty dumb driver who manually locks the armrest compartment with his key, but is unaware that he didn't actually close it.

SOme leave the radio wire shorted out which will cause the same thing as leaving the armrest compartment open.
