1997 986 cruise retro?

Hello folks,

I have read where some have been successful in retrofiting Boxsters with Cruise Control. I have not read where it has been done on a 1997. Just wondering if it is possible, and what parts I would need? Also, read that once done the computer needs to be reprogammed. Is this true and how much are we talking about at the dealer?

It is a major job on a cable-throttle 986/996. I did it on my 1998 C2. You need the actuator, throttle pedal, 4-stalk unit, and plenty of time and patience!! Another guy on RennTech did it on his Boxster at the same time as me, and he did a DIY write-up which I helped him with. If you would like a copy, PM me.

It was so long ago that I can't remember if I had to code the cluster for cruise. I am fairly sure I didn't have to, as the only wire connected to the cluster is for the cruise readiness light.

I don't remember what model year I took this screenshot on - but it may require turning on (a 5 minute job).

But if the car didn't come with the stalk, just turning on the OBC's CC won't do a thing.

That screen shot is applicable to MY '97 through '03 although the CC activation screen may be in the ECU or in the Cluster window depending on model year.

On a non-eGas 986 or 996 none of the controls, or the actuator for the cruise are connected to the DME, so I don't think it needs coding there. I also don't think there is an option in the older instrument clusters to code for cruise. Although I wired mine to the OBD2 socket as per the factory wiring, there wasn't any diagnostics in the PST2 for it either.

Unlike the e-Gas cruise which connects to the DME and/or Instrument cluster, the mechanical cruise gets it's speed signal from the grey/pink wires, and controls the throttle pedal mechanically.

If you decide to install a cruise control, why not go the full monte and install the OBC too? You would need a four stalk switch asembly. The switch assembly I saw on e-Bay was a three stalk assembly.
