This is a picture of an '01 996 Turbo's 5th gear synchro. The dealership says it was damaged due to a miss-shift or abuse. This seems odd since I never miss a shift and I don't abuse my vehicle. Could this damage be caused by a previous owner (I purchased with 25k)? I'm not a technician so any added info about this picture or anything you notice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

It could.

The dog teeth on the brass syncro ring looks worn or damaged. They should come to a sharp point just like the steel teeth just below the brass colored part.

This is not my picture.

curious, what are they going to charge you to replace the synchro?

The Porsche dealer won't work on it. They claim they cant' be rebuilt in the US, the tranny has to be replaced.

The dealer also claims this wasn't wear it was a single catastrophic event. It won't be covered under warranty due to "abuse".

-Toolpants: The synchro stop in my picture is totally missing, The one you showed has an aparent notch and a little corner missing. How would my synchro stop be totally missing?

That is a HUGE load of B.S. Find another dealership as I know for a fact these transmissions are getting torn down and rebuilt.

Anyways it hard to believe a single event could have caused this though it is impossible to tell for sure. 25,000 is a lot of miles for potential damage to occur. Hell, I saw a Mitsubishi EVOVIII get traded into a dealership with 5k miles on it and the clutch was completely toast. I dont know how its possible but I felt it with my own left foot.
