I am a fan of Red Seat belts that were a option year after my car (2001) Apparently they are wider according to helpful tech at Suncoast. I have a oppurtunity to buy some cheap and curious if anyone has ever installed these on a 2001?

thanks

I know that there is a difference between the two ('01-'02), it was a topic on 6speed about this.

I love too the red belts, they look awesome on a black interior! :)

From the model year 2002 Tech Book

"For model year '02, all 911 models are fitted with belt tensioners and belt-force tensioners.

The pyrotechnic ball belt tensioner is combined with the belt-force limiter in one unit.

The threshold value for triggering the pyrotechnic belt tensioner is calculated as for the airbag actuation from the sensor signals for vehicle deceleration. The triggering of the belt tensioner during a frontal collision takes place together with the triggering of the front airbags.

During a rear collision only the belt tensioner is triggered.

The balls are driven through a pyrotechnic propellant charge. This kinetic energy is carried over to the belt reel via a pinion. Belt slack is taken up by winding in belt.

Belt-force limiters

To avoid bruising and internal injury, the belt's pulling force must be limited to a bearable level. Further tensioning beyond a dangerous pulling force level is prevented. The belt can be balanced up to a certain length via a torsion shaft in the belt mechanism."

Since the newer style seat belts are driven off the airbag circuit I do not think they would work properly in older cars.

I'm wondering if the MY2001 Turbos had pre-tensioners (unlike the 01 Carreras). Reason being that the PET shows the MY01 belts as being superceded by the ones used on MY02- vehicles.

Richard - I don't see that. I see MY01 clearly has different seat belts than MY02 and newer.

The Porsche Service Information Book for MY02 996TT also talks about the new pyrotechnic tensioners for MY2002.

Thanks everyone for your input. Based on Loren's contribution and my desire to live i will be passing on install of these.

Alex, i was buying from a buddy for a couple hundred bucks. They were used for a year or two and he changed interior of car for with roll bar belts etc? I will see if he wants to sell and let you know contact info.

If you double-click the top item, this is what it comes up with - the 997 belt. It makes me think that the pyro-tensioners are OK to use in an 01 car.

Very interesting - my PET (Update 256 / 37) set to Other (market) or Local does not offer that.

Loren, what do you think? can I install these 2002 red belts in my car and have functional seat belts? I can get them for cheap from my friend and would like to give it a shot.

let me know when you can.

I wouldn't put the newer style belts with pyrotechnic tensioners in an older car - you don't have the electronics to trigger them. Just my 2 cents.

Certainly better to be safe than sorry - it isn't something you want to risk. Why not phone a dealer, or Sunset, and ask them if the original belts are still available or have been superceded?

thanks to both for your comments on belts and I am gonna error on side of safety. I did call dealer and they confirmed they werent offered and that the install could be done wouldnt gurantee belts would work as designed.

thanks again. :thankyou:
