Hello all

When I was changing the rear brakes on my 2002 996 C4 Cab, I noticed some rust on a sliver part (see photos) on the driver side. My first question is what is this part and my second question is should I be concerned? As always your input is greatly appreciated.

It is a splash shield to keep spray, etc. off of the coil packs, etc. Not a major concern, but it is unusual that is has corroded out like that. It is aluminum and it looks almost like something corrosive got on it. The old part number for a 2002 is 996.104.445.01 which has been superseded to 996.104.445.02. List price is bout $22.00, 10 minutes to change it out.

Thank you for the replies.

But, but, but, determine what caused the corrosion! The shields on my 2002 look almost new. Hot glycol coolant can be corrosive but I don't think it would cause that damage.

I'm pretty sure I have several of these off of new 3.6 and 3.8 crate motors that were put in boxster chassis. If your interested in one or a set I'll let them go for 1/2 of list price.

Thanks for your concern. I am the third owner of this vehicle. Back in February my coolant expansion tank sprung a leak. Since then I have not noticed any puddles on the garage floor. I also drive teh car in the winter in northern NJ. We use quite a bit of salt on the roads.

I will PM you.

Ah ha, salt on the roads. We don't have much experience with that in California. I suggest periodic water washes to remove the salt.
