1999 996 C2 Coupe 6spd.

Is the emergency trunk release in the passenger's side front wheel well or on the driver's side for my 1999 996 C2?

I remember reading a response by Loren a few months back that indicated the passenger's side...but after fishing there, up and around the pull back wheel well cover I can't find it.

My Porshe dealer says its under the plastic wheel weel cover on the driver's side but all I can find there is a bicycle "break style" black cable which they say to give a good yank to open the trunk.

Before I go pulling any questionable cables can someone direct me...

On all US cars it is on the passenger side (unless someone moved it). It should not be black it should be a braided steel cable with a small loop on the end.

My guess would be wiring to the radiator fan or the windshield washer hose or the main release cable (inside the shielded cable).

Item 12 is the emergency release - item 11 is the normal release cable.

I suspect that number 11 in the diagram is the main cable release because you can feel movement when someone inside the car lifts the trunk release lever.

I'll find number 12 release in the diagram when I pull the headlamp assy out tomorrow and re-route that puppy to the front tow hook port...great idea...

The emergency cable for both the engine cover and the hood is easy to get to and use. Simply lift the light assemly slightly from the bottom using a hard plastic flat tool (or rag covered screwdriver) and using a flashlight, you will see the braided cable. There is a loop at the end of the cable that you can catch with a cloth's hanger. Pull on the cable and you are in! Put the cable back under the light assembly and your car is back to normal.

Just a bit of follow up here...I pulled the passenger side headlight assembly and there it was. I don't know why I was surprised to see the emergency release, but I was...anyway I re-routed the cable thru the tow bolt assy and affixed the line to the front hole cap on the bumper. Its a piece of cake.

Also a piece of cake was the engine compartment emergency line under the driver's side tail light. I rerouted that to an area behind the L. rear fender.

It always kind of bothered me that in an emergency (like with a dead battery or some other failure where you need to get into the trunk or engine compartment to correct), our friends at Zuffenhausen designed emergency access that was impossible to access in case of an emergency...sort of makes sense...anyway, thank you to those that helped me resolve another Porsche quandry...but, man, do I love this car...
