Hello,

I would be very grateful if one of you could explain to me the basic principle of the engine oil pressure gauge on the 911.

I understand that the gauge is graduated in bar. I also observe that the measurement needle is most of time on 5 bar, going slightly under from time to time but I can't precisely explain when and why... :huh:

The owner's manual explains that the engine oil pressure should be around 3.5 bar when the engine runs at 5000 rpm.

Is it a reference which I should take for a constant value ? [in that case is my 5 bar measure abnormal?]

I am asking these stupid questions and forgive me in advance for that...I know that I should check by myself in order to understand how this oil pressure needles reacts, but I am under the break in period of my car and I wish to respect it, therefore I don't want to go higher than the 4200 rpm to control this 3.5 bar value...

I have another stupid question I would like to ask; it concerns the tires pressure. For the 997, the manual indicates 2.5 bar at the front and 3 bar for the rear tires. Should I respect these values exactly or can I put less pressure in my tires according to the bumpy road conditions around the place I live in ? For example, can I move the values to a 0.2 scale ?

Thank you for your help. It's my first 911, I dreamt of this car for so many years and today I fulfill a dream. Maybe I am going nuts which probably explain the overall degree of cleverness of my questions, down to zero...anyway if you could respond to my questions, I would really take into account your comments.

In all the 996's I have driven, the oil gauge acts as follows:

When cold and at idle the gauge is at 5.

After complete warm up it can go as low as 1.75 on a warm day.

It is generally at 5 with rpm's above 3200 when warm.

It should never go below 1.5 at idle and should be close to 5 above 3200 rpm.

That is with 0w - 40w oil. If you are running 15W - 50W oil, then the minimum will be around 2.

If you drop below 1.5 at idle, check the oil level and/or engine temp.
