Eratic idle.......then dies

ok.. so I have a 84' 944 that will idle unevenly then die if your foot is not on the pedal to keep it running. i started having this problem at low idles such as the car would die at a stop light. I replaced the fuel pump with another USED fuel pump but have the same problem. I almost feel the problem is worse. I still need to get a hold of a new fuel filter but thought i would replace the pump today as i had the time to do so. could i have possibly switched the electic leads on the pump (black & red) or would that prevent the car from starting at all? or could it be something else? would a new fuel filter resolve the issue.

any advice out there would be much appreciated.

sounds like you have a vacum leak or your idle switch needs adjusting

Hi, I have an 85 944 and seem to be having a very similar problem. My mechanic has told me that my problem is the Air Mass Meter(costs about $600) and is nolonger made by Bosch. I've had him replace it with one from.........that they had cross referenced to a different Bosch number and that one didn't work at all. So now I have my car back and still owe the shop and am trying to get my money back on the part and trying to find one. Good luck....

Air flow meters can fail but not often, they can also be tested but most techs don't know how. There are many things that can be at fault which would cause idle problems. The first thing if to check for vacuum leaks then fuel pressure/volume and residule pressure. The basic need to be verified and guessing by throwing parts at it is never a wise idea.

If the tech misdiagnosed the problem, why do owe them anything?
