I put my car in storage for the winter and inspected this weekend. I found a leak under the tail end of my transmission. I have a Boxster S 3.2 with a 6 speed manual.

After closer scrutiny, it appears the leak is from around the seal on the electrical connection that lives on the extreme rear part of the transmission passengers side about 2 O'clock looking from the back of the car. What exactly is this and can it be tightened. Does it have a gasket that needs to be replaced? Any other ideas?

Another question about this if anyone knows what I am talking about?

Is there a special tool required like a split socket or does the wire come off easy so I can get a conventional socket on it?

Sounds like the the backup light switch. The connector should come off - most Porsche connectors have a latch type mechanism. It does not have a gasket so if it is leaking (and not just loose) you'll need to replace the switch (996 606 133 00).

Thanks for your interest in my little problem.

In looking at your photo this looks like the business end of the tranny heading for the engine? I may get the same answer from you but my connector is on the tail end of the tranny just prior to where the muffler hander resides. (Passenger side of the car)

Is there anything different with this connection what ever it is?

Thats actually the tail of the transmission, the flange on the end is for the cardan shaft on a Carrera 4 which heads up to the front differential. Anyways, as has been mentioned already, the only electrical connector on the transmission is for the reverse light switch.

Thanks again! I think I have the picture now. I'm kind of hard headed.

Does anyone have any kind of detail on how the "latch" type mechanism works. This connection is in a very tight location and my eyes are not what they used to be.

This sounds like it should be an easy do it yourself but I do not want to brake something in the process.

If I remember correctly there is one tab on the side of the connector which faces the transmission. Pinch towards the back of the connector and it should come off easily.

Thanks to you guys I am making progress on this leak problem. I was able to get the clip compressed and have the wire off. I also found a way to get a socket on the fitting which will allow me to remove the fitting that is leaking.

Two questions:

1. When I remove the fitting will I lose a lot lot of fluid?

2. Is the part number you gave me in one of your previous replies specific for this fitting and a Boxster S?

1. If you have the replacement switch ready you should lose very little oil - rememeber this is 75W-90 gear oil and is very thick.

2. Yes - according to my Oct 2004 parts list.

Loren,

I finally got my new switch and it replaced quite easy. No more leak! Now all have to do is add fluid to get up within the prescribed level. I think I have found the proper place to fill? I am looking at a nut about 1/2 the way back from the axle about 1/4 of the way down from the top. There appears to be a drain directly below this near the bottom of the transmission casting. Does this sound correct?

Thanks to you I now have a leak free transmission and have the proper amount of fluid. I will be ready to hit the road as soon as the snow leaves MN. Hopefully by July :lol:
