I haven't seen him around in a while. He used to also sell high quality Porsche Door Sills as well. What exactly are you looking for? I may be able to help.

I'm amazingly confused with my car. It's a '99 996, CR-220 and M490 is on the option tag.

Unfortunately the previous owner took out the original amp and possibly some other items I'm unaware of. I'm trying to get the car back to OEM but with an aftermarket head unit.

Why are there two different amps labeled as M490? One says 4x40 and the other says 4x60. Will either work? Is there a way to tell which my car originally came with?

No, they are 4X40 and 6X40.

 

Boxsters typically arrive with 4X40, the four channels driving 2 dash speakers and 2 subwoofers in door.

 

996 cars have similar amps but 6X40, the six channels driving 2 dash speakers, 2 subwoofers in door, and 2 rear area speakers.

 

"Channel" means left or right.  40 watts per channel

Would love to know as well. I installed a cabriolet M490 amp in my coupe and all works well aside from having to slightly modify the female connector.

Well, here's some information.

 

The first 996 amp I purchased was 996 645 311 00, an amp from and for a 996 coupe.

 

Since I don't believe in random coincidence and noting that the original amp in in the Boxster is 986 645 323 00, I purchased a second 996 amp, 996 645 323 00, labeled for 996 Cabrio.

 

Just don't think "323" is a random coincidence and instead describes amps for open/soft top cars.

 

Anyway got it installed and immediately noticed a difference.  More volume from the rears and more bass overall.

 

Yes, it's a comparison of just two used amps, and maybe three minutes listening--not necessarily conclusive and have no other data from Porsche other than my "323" assumption.

 

But, I'd just recommend searching for the 996 Cabrio amp when converting your Boxster to have rear speakers.

I’ve completed this mod with help from this thread and will relate that 996/911 6x40 amps are available in both coupe and cabrio versions.  I’ve tried both and will report the cabrio version is preferable.  In fact it’s amazing, as the original 4x40 amp must have been a poor spec, as with the cabrio 6x40 my original door woofers have come alive, performing much better with more volume than previously.  6x40 amp I have has 323 in part number.

Looks like you need to cut off the internal keys on the 996 amp so you can get the Boxster female connector on. That is my first pic.

I looked at the amp wiring diagrams for a 2000 Boxster and a 996 and they look the same to me for the pins. I was a history major so do not trust me. I scanned them so send me a direct email as you cannot do attachments with PM. There are 20 pins on each amp but not all the pins are used and/or work. To confuse you a bit the Boxster did come with a 6x40 amp with the DSP option which got you rear speakers.

On both amps pin 6 is the positive rear left speaker. 16 is the negative for the left.

On both amps pin 5 is the positive rear right speaker. 15 is the negative for the right.

Your Boxster female amp connector should have emptly holes for pins 6, 16, 5, and 15 if I am correct. The second pic has white lines to 6 and 16, and yellow lines to 5 and 15. Pins 1-10 are on the bottom row and 11-20 on the top. In the pic you count from right to left.

The round pins that I think fit in the male amp connector are 999 652 568 22. The third pic has a yellow line to a pair of those pins.

Let us know if you can confirm this info.

Does anyone happen to know the specs for those female connectors, indicated by the yellow line? I need to order some to hook up my rear speakers.

Your profiles say 2003 Boxster - in that year there were two option amps.

Do you need the Harman amp or the BOSE amp?

Hi Loren,

I have the Becker (Harman) 6-channel amp. I need to buy the female connectors. I’ve verified that my rear speakers work by making contact with the 3,12 and 4,13 amplifier terminals. Your wiring diagram was very helpful, thanks for sharing that.


The wire harness that I bought from Porsche didn’t include the adapter harness to go from the brown head unit connector to amplifier terminals.
