Hey can anyone tell me how to take the faceplate off the proper way, so I can re-attach the Lock/Unlock button on my 996. Somehow it has been pushed in (not sure if clip is broke). I would like to do it properly without damaging anything. Appreciate suggestions. Thanks!

Just pull that part of the horseshoe off. Pry with a cloth and plastic tool if it is real tight.

The switch just snaps into place (unless it is broken).

Yes, I call it horseshoe because of the whole shape of the trim - but on your MY2000 car it is 3 pieces. So that side should pry off separately.
