Got the sensor out of the block, how do you unclip/release the connector?

I had the same problem. There is a tab on the CPS side of the connector that is pressed to remove the connector from the bracket. It cannot be seen from under the car and I could not get my finger on it. I used a 90 degree distributor screw driver to press it. Once the connector is out of the bracket it can be unplugged.

I attached a pic with an arrow pointing to the tab.

I had the exact same problem with my 1999 Boxster last week (Car got hot and would shut off. It would not start until given time to cool down).

The fuel relay had signs of extreme heat damage (blacken and melted). After replacing both the fuel relay and fuel pump the car still refused to start.

My mechanic replaced the camshaft position sensor and she started right up.

I had the exact same problem with my 1999 Boxster last week (Car got hot and would shut off. It would not start until given time to cool down).

The fuel relay had signs of extreme heat damage (blacken and melted). After replacing both the fuel relay and fuel pump the car still refused to start.

My mechanic replaced the camshaft position sensor and she started right up.

I have a Carrera 4 1999 it runs just fine 65k on motor. The issue that I have is after I stop driving the car take a short trip or long trip. I come back out to start the care and it will not start. It runs around 200 deg F the car is black so after stoping the car I do have a lot of heat at the motor as it cools off. I can not tell if my blower is comming on in the motor compartment. I have also checked all the realys they seam to be ok. I also have noticed that my air spoiler is not going up at 75 mph. This could be a computer code error?? So what I have found out is when this no start comes up for me I have to un hook the battery then hook it back up to clear the computer. But this is not a fix for me.. Any one have a Idea on what to check or do I need to set codes ???

It is rare for the engine purge fan to come on at all.

Mine only comes on after I come off the track while I am idling during cool down.

"Switch-on conditions for engine compartment fan (this fan pulls air into the engine compartment) The engine compartment fan is switched on when the engine compartment temperature is > 176 degrees F or the coolant temperature is > 216 degrees F.

After-running of engine compartment fan

If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 140 degrees F, the DME control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is > 185 degrees F , the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still > 185 degrees F after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds."

Your spoiler issue could be as simple as a fuse. Have you tried the manual operation switch down by the fuse box door?

Just ordered my Crankshaft position sensor now I have to wait to drive the car... :soapbox:

Yes the manuel spoiler switch works just fine and it will sometimes go back down just not up...

If it always works with the manual switch (up and down) then you can rule out the relays and spoiler motor.

Then the question become the instrument cluster sending the right message. You will need the Durametric software or a PST2 tester, or a PIWIS tester to further diagnose.

If you are having these symptoms, replace the crankshaft position sensor! 

 

This forum saved me. My 1999 996 convertible stalled at a light while my wife was driving it. It would not start and she had it pushed to a nearby gas station. An hour or so later, just as the tow truck arrived, the car started back up. We drove it to a shop who could not find anything wrong with the car. The car was not throwing any error codes and they drove it around for a bit with no stalls. They did not charge us, but did not fix anything either. This made me nervous as I doubted that it was a one time occurrence. The next day after picking our son up, the car stalls and dies on me while stopped/turning onto our street. I had a bad feeling and it came true. Very scary to stall while trying to cross a road with on coming traffic.

 

Since the shop did not find anything, we resorted to searching the web for some solutions. The signs pointed to a bad fuel pump or fuel pump relay. I replaced the fuel pump relay myself, the problem still existed as I could now drive a few loops around our street and the car would stall when I stopped in my driveway. After a few hours, the car would start right back up. We called a mobile mechanic to have the fuel pump replaced. He wanted to try the fuel filter first as it is a cheaper fix. That did nothing. Next, we replaced the fuel pump. After replacing the fuel pump, we drove the car a few loops around our street, pulled into the driveway, let the car sit. Then we drove in reverse for another loop around the street and the car stalls and will not start. We pushed it back into the driveway and then it would start a few hours later. The mechanic was stumped.

 

At this point we were losing hope until I stumbled upon this forum. After reading all the posts, the symptoms were the same. After the car would get warm, it would stall out and then would not start again until it was cool. I called the mobile mechanic and he was not sure it would be the crankshaft position sensor and did not want me just throwing money at the car. I told him that I found this forum and others had the same exact problems we were having. Others tried replacing the fuel pump, etc. but the car would still stall when hot. They replaced the crankshaft position sensor and voila, problem solved. He said OK and replaced our crankshaft position sensor. We drove the car around our street three times, let it run in the driveway, drove it around another time and it did not stall! Today, we drove the car to during rush hour traffic with no stalling. Problem solved! Thank you so much for sharing this information on this forum as we and the mechanics were starting to lose hope. I love this car and it has been amazing. This was the first real issue we had with it and we want to gain trust in the car again. If anything, the car does run a little nicer, I am sure all this ethanol gas is not good for her.

Thank you! This saved me $$$. We had similar symptoms with our 1999 996 convertible. The car would stall when stopped after the engine was warm. Replaced the fuel pump relay, fuel filter, and fuel pump before stumbling upon this forum. The shop and mobile mechanics were stumped. After no luck with replacing the fuel pump, I had them replace the crankshaft position sensor and the problem is solved!
