Clutch Noise When Car Is Warm

I have a 99 C2 with about 15K on a remanufactured engine (72K miles on the car). About 20K since new clutch and flywheel. If I get the RPMs up higher than normal when starting out in first gear (say around 1500 to 2000) and the car is warm, I will hear chirp before the clutch is fully engaged ... kind of sounds like a belt squeak. I have tried to see if I can get the clutch to slip at high RPMs shifting from 2nd to 3rd, but I'm not noticing any slippage, so I don't think my clutch is worn. I can't say for certain that the noise is coming from the transmission, but it is either from the transmission or the engine. Thoughts? For what its worth, the clutch release lever was updated and the release bearing was replaced within the past 20K.

Hmm, sounds like it could be the throw-out bearing. 20K is a short amount of time for one of these to go, but not unheard of either...

How loud is it....? I get a little chirp as well.... my 99 C2 went back under warranty to have this repaired but as Iwas not the owner at the time, I have no idea what they finally diagnosed it as.... I want to think there was a TSB on it as well....

You will need to replace the release lever arm for sure and anything else that is worn.

My car already has the updated release lever discussed in the TSB 7/00 3041. I wouldn't describe the noise as a creaking noise. It sounds similar to a belt slipping. Someone mentioned the release bearing, even though the bearing doesn't have too many miles on it. Question is: if it is the release bearing, why would I only hear the noise when the car is warm?

I also have the same noise in my 01 996. After looking at all the forums I beleive the consensus is the throwout bearing, although it has never been confirmed by a mechanic. I've now been living with the noise for 3 years and have had no issues with my clutch except the mild embarrassment when pulling away at a stop sign. As you mentioned , the screeching only happens in 1st gear with higher revs and slow clutch release and when the car in warm. Having this noise pop up is not all bad though. My clutch control has got much better trying to ensure I don't rev too high when I pull away in 1st gear.

fair enough although like you said, it hasn't been confirmed by a mechanic so this is all here-say. someone needs to get in front of a porsche tech and make the sound for them and say it's the TO bearing. i'm not fully convinced. my whole clutch kit is brand new, it can't be the TO bearing. i heard it could possibly be a worn tranny mount....

Subscribed. I also have this clutch noise. It's intermittent and can't be reproduced by will. When it happens, the car is warmed up and I'm starting a little agressively from a stop. I have an '03 with almost 40k miles. Clutch replaced at 10k miles (due to distorted clutch material. Nothing with my driving).

reviving this old thread. Did you find the fault?

 

I have noticed the exact same issue, comes up after long periods of city driving so seems like an overheated or worn throw out bearing. PO replaced the clutch some 20k miles ago and the garage that did the job claims they used a kit including the bearing so I’m wondering if it might be something else. My clutch feels strong, no issues besides the squeal once in a while upon release in first gear.

wow. blast from the past.

 

mine turned out to be a glazed flywheel. I cured the problem by letting the clutch out gently, barely touching the gas each time I started from a standstill. keep RPM under 1200 until the clutch is fully released. over a few months, the noise slowly went away. I think it helped spread the clutch material more evenly over the flywheel. aggressive starts didn't help.  be gentle with it!

I am suspecting it would be something else than a worn bearing, since the clutch is rather new, and I drove 45 min in stop and go traffic today without being able to replicate the sound, so its rare but present.
