I just bought a 996 convertible with no users manual. Replaced water pump today with great tutorial from here. Now I can't figure out how to lower the convertible top. There is a switch, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Do I have to unlatch something, put the e brake on, something else>?>??

To lower the top:

- Hand brake on

- Ignition is switched on (engine running or off)

- engine compartment lid closed

Press the dash rocker switch until top is at the open or closed position.

You can also open with the key while the key is in the drivers door lock.

Also, get a user's manual off of eBay, worth the weight in gold. Especially if you come to get a hard top (I also got my user manuals and hard top off of eBay). I have no affiliation to eBay, it's just bloody useful for secondhand stuff.

Why buy off of eBay? Chance's are you will get over charged for this item.

Thanks a ton. I didn't have the handbrake on. Now I'm having a wierd problem. Sometimes when it is trying that final latch operation when closing, it hooks, then unhooks, then hooks again, then unhooks, over and over. I noticed that there is a plastic trim piece covering this metal hook that was a bit loose and off kilter. It seems that when I refitted this, the top hooked and stayed hooked (light went off on dash too). Could this be related? Did that plastic piece interfere with the switch that's in the recess where that metal hook goes?

The little piece of plastic covering the hook does matter. I had the same problem with mine when it became cracked and worked loose. A little spot of super glue sorted it out or if you need a new one the part number is 996-561-787-00.
