996 Pse Pics

My 996 passenger side muffler is out and not only can I not find a second hand one anywhere... (the oem is $3400) but most shops dont even know what it looks like so I am seeking a photo if anyone can help. This is the muffler with the valve bypass.

Any advice on a cheaper way to pick up one of these? Whats a good oem parts store here in the US if any?

I need a driver side myself. Just spoke with Suncoast Parts, they quoted me $2,567. Definitely ain't cheap!

Has anyone tried to cut it open to see if it is repairable?

If you do some searches you will see that loose baffles in the mufflers are not that uncommon. The challenge here is that you have the PSE (so do I but no loose baffles yet). The whole system used to go for about $1,800, including both switches, the cut over valve, wiring, vacuum lines, etc. Now Porsche has raised the price to over twice that. The are lots of alternatives, either the OEM non-PSE mufflers, or aftermarket. The thing that is sad is that I really like the switchable sounds of the PSE. The loud mode is really fun, but if you are getting on it, particularly over 5,000 rpm it is really loud, and everyone within a block or so knows it. The quiet mode is useful and relaxing, and allows you to get on the thing without the whole world knowing it. I also think my neighbors appreciate it when I come home late at night.

Maybe jeffstudiola and mann can work out a deal where one goes to an alternate system and the other gets the muffler they need.

That is crafty, Loren! :)

Looking at what you have done to your stock exhaust leads me to believe that I could just transplant the PSE bypass pipe/valve mechanism from my rattling muffler onto the new stock muffler ($523.14 @ Suncoast) thus solving the problem and saving a bundle. Thanks a lot for the idea! I will definitely be looking into implementing it!

Not my stock exhaust - I bought a PSE back in 2000 when they were cheap ($1250!).

The modder is member FisterD send him a PM and ask how much?

Hadn't thought of transplanting the valve mechanism but it seems like a reasonable idea. You might want to find a used muffler, maybe on eBay,rather than cutting up a new one.

Yeah, I am looking at a couple of used mufflers on ebay, will MK1 muffler work on MK2 996? Does anyone have a part number for driver side 996 MK2 stock muffler?

Muffler Resolved!

I took my car in to Kartek (here in Los Angeles) and they opened up the muffler and welded the loose baffle. Cheap and fast repair after getting about three quotes for $3000 plus to replace the oem muffler. PSE back in action!

Nice! So it is possible after all to just open the thing up and weld the baffle in.

As for my case Porsche is replacing the muffler under CPO, so no need for the transplant exercise, although I still think it is very doable as well.
