Hey guys,

Im having an issue with my 99 boxster's 5th gear at the moment, it was working fine up until yesterday.

now it wont shift into 5th, at all.

i reversed out of my drive way and drove off and ever since then it just hasnt wanted to shift. theres no warning lights and all the other gears are working fine but it feels like im hitting a wall in the gearbox when it comes to changing into 5th,

has anyone else had this issue or no what the problem could be?

cheers.

Hello,

I also have a '99 Boxster and had this problem when I first got the car. I forced it to go in and it gradually got lighter and I haven't had the problem since. That was about four years ago.

Ok. i just talked to a porsche dealer and he said it sounds like an issue with the Reverse Gear Lock out Locking out 5th gear.

This been an issue with anyone?

Still have this problem. Nothing wrong with the linkages. Something internal, any ideas from anyone?

If the dealer has correctly checked the external linkage, and nothing is wrong, it is time to pull the gear box............. A good time to upgrade your IMS and RMS as well.....

This was the first symptom in what turned out to be a degrading clutch for my 2k Boxster.

So problem was remedied. Guy pulled the box out and stripped it. No damage or broken parts so he cleaned it, re-assembled and put it back in the car. Now it works perfectly. Apparently it was just realy filthy inside and caused something to jam up. Thankfully was pretty cheap to get fixed since nothing was broken.

Pull the shift boot and look for coins that have fallen into the shift gate from the ashtray...

When I took the center console out of mine, I found at least $5 from the previous owner. laugh.gif

I had a similar issue, but mine was no Reverse, 1st and 3rd gear. I had to crawl home on 2nd and 4th gear. I too found at least $4.50 in change under the coin box LOL. But that was not the issue. I waited for the exhaust system to cool down before jacking it up on the right rear to take a look see (since the shift cable goes down that side). It turned out that the lower shift cable have popped out of the fork. Hmmm .. sounds suspicious since I just had all the drive shaft replaced and had the work done by an independent Porsche specialist ( I spent a ton of money there). While I was under the car I also discovered one of the Bolt was loose ( the one just above the brace under the transmission) Hmmmm ... could this be the work of a sloppy mechanic ? The shift cable lock clips were bent inwards and would not lock the cable in place, so after some quick and hard shifting going through twistie will work the cable off the fork. I'll definitely make it a quarterly schedule to check the rear linkage of the transmission. So far the shift has been crisp and accurate.
