2003 996 C4S / 86,000 KM (53,750 Miles).

Last minor service was done on 75,000 KM (~47k miles) where the oil and filter where changed, my baby consumes around 1 litre of oil every 1,200 to 1,500 KM, which is normal according to porsche and my service advisor.

The question is do i need to change the oil and oil filter after driving 11,000 KM? doesn't topping up the engine with 1 litre of oil every 1.5k tend to in a sense replace the lost oil? or do i need to change the oil filter?

N.B: I live in Dubai and it's getting very hot here at the moment, thinking of switching to castrol 15w50, anyone recommends this move? my porsche is off the warranty...

Thanks!!

Nehmaiz:

Changing the oil and the filter at shorter, rather than longer intervals, is ALWAYS a good thing.

Changing the oil and filter at 15K mile intervals (as originally recommended [or, more accurately, "marketed"]) by Porsche, and even the 12K mile intervals that Porsche now advocates is not a wise course of action, especially in view of some of the information now available regarding the IMS bearing and the deleterious effect on said bearing by contaminated oil (when the oil can get through the sealed IMS bearing). Most people on these forums favor changing the oil and filter in no longer than 7,500 mile intervals, with some doing it every 5,000 miles. You can't go wrong with changing the oil and filter with those intervals, as far as oil is concerned. If you DIY, the increased cost in doing more frequent oil changes is negligible. If you don't DIY, this is a perfect reason to learn just that simple procedure. As an added bonus, you never have to wait for an appointment, nor drive to the dealer and wait, or have someone pick you up or bring you back, etc...

Again, if you read the various opinions on oil, Mobil 1 has fallen out of favor recently as their formula no longer meets its original standard.

A heavier weight Castrol is what I use, after much reading from some very knowledgeable people here and on various oil-obsessed web sites!

Regards, Maurice.

Just for your info,

i've opted to go with Castrol's Sports Edge 10w60 synthetic... anyone ever tried this oil?

from what i've noticed the engine is running much more smoothly with less noise.

i will have to see the oil consumtion after 1,000 to 1,500 Km to judge if it's better than the Mobil1.

Absolutely change the oil. I'm recommending 3000-5000 in my new book on these cars. The longer life oil change intervals have been pushed on the car makers by the environmentalists, and the result is contaminated oil and engine failures. Change often!

How about thoughts on jumping ship to Castrol Syntec? From the information that I've been able to gather, a switch from Mobil 1 0W40 to 5W30 or 5W40 might sound like a good idea?

Thanks!

I have switch to Castrol syntec. Very happy so far. Althought I haven't found or tried the 10w 60.

Don't be afraid to try Castrol Syntec's 10W-40, slightly higher base weight gives it considerably "longer legs" in high temp/high shear applications. Holds ACEA A3, B3, B4 ratings as well.............

I think the brand and weight of oil is less important than the frequency of changes. Change often!

Wayne, I don't think you would say that if you have seen some of the UoA's that I have.......................Yikes!

well another update from my side, temperatures are soaring up to 47 degrees celsius, i've managed to drive the car for 1,000 KM now and amazingly the oil level is still at full!!

Castrol sports Edge 10W60 is definitely my choice from now on!!! mobil 1 would have dissolved by now...

I'm a believer now...

cheers guys.
