I own a 1999 C2 Coupe, Tip, with 23,000 miles. The dealer informs me that the RMS is leaking and should be replaced. The car is out of warranty and the dealer estimates the cost to replace the seal at $1800. Is this about what others have paid for this service? Thanks . . . .

It is a lot of job because they have to drop the transmission. Go and "shop" around. If you go to a 3rd party shop (a non-dealer) make sure that they use the newest version of the RMS and also that they use the special tool make specifically to put it in place. But most important, make sure that you have a garantee that it is going to last (I think Porche dealers have to garantee the work for 2 years unlimmited miles) In my case they replaced that seal 5 times in the last 2 years..... and ended up giving me a new engine.

Do a search on the board. Toopants posted pictures of the tool so you know what to ask for if you get a quote from an independant.

The RMS issue is a known manufacturing defect on these engines. I would try to contact the DSM and get it covered as a warranty item. After all, your car only has 23K miles.

The charges on my car for the factory authorized repair ran about $800. $1,800 is WAY out of line. If they know what they are doing, it's a 4-5 hour job. If they are not familiar with this repair, find another dealer who is.

Was that for a manual transmission? Apparently it takes about an hour longer to get out an automatic transmission. Nonetheless, $1800 seems an awful lot.

Also, I completely agree with your second comment that it is important to find a dealer who does it on a regular basis. Whether the repair last or not depends (among other things such as crank alignment) definitley on the mechanic's experience.

Cheers,

Very good news. The dealer contacted Porsche and the company agreed to pay "assistance" in the amount of 1/2 of the repair costs for the RMS - - -bottom line was that it cost me about $400 and I now have a 2 year warranty on the repair. All things considered, I am pleased.
