I need to replace a fauly cluster in my '05 987 which has clearly been tampered with by the previous owner. I am happy to remove the old cluster myself and I can buy a brand new one online much cheaper than from the dealer. If I do this will the new cluster automatically reset to the correct odometer reading etc or do I have to have this set beforehand. Same applies if I come across a good 2nd hand cluster set - will it automatically reset to my car's values or do I have to have this changed first (?or after install?). Many thanks.

If it is a new cluster then it can be re-programmed with your old settings using a PIWIS tester.

If the cluster is used and had more than 52 mile (60 km) then it can not have the odometer reset. Check your local laws but here in the US you can still do that it just needs to be noted (actual mileage) in the car's registration records.

Same procedure hold re-program via PIWIS to your old settings - except for odometer.

There are 3rd party companies that say they can change them - but again check your local laws before doing so.
