Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has come accross this problem before. The roads are so bad over here that I'm getting a rattle on the hood where the two lugs locate into the windscreen frame. I have managed to reduce this with some thin foam, but what I'd really like to do is to make the hood frame push a little more closely to the windscreen frame. Alternatively is there a way to increase the tension of the center handle when it pulls the hood to the screen frame.

Timbo:

You can make the top more "taut" by adjusting the tension ropes which are attached to the underside of the rear main bow. That will have the effect of pulling the rear of the convertible top frame down and away from the front.

The adjustment is done by means of the adjusting bolt which is located on each side of, and below, the engine compartment cover. If you follow the cables down, you will find the 14mm bolt head just above the steel ball to which it attaches, one on each side. Turning the bolt CCW makes it more taut, IIRC.

You can also verify that the front edge of the convertible top is mating up properly with the horizontal top edge of the windshield frame. You can adjust how far it goes forward to meet up with that windshield frame by varying the overall length of the front pushrods (at the V-levers). Fine adjustment by turning the plastic ball cups, more drastic adjustment by loosening the 10mm nut with fat washer and extending the metal pieces before tightening them again.

Regards, Maurice.

Thanks Maurice, I think its the pushrods I need to work on, are they easy to see with the hood in the service position.

Timbo:

You can see them and access them with the top in the service position.

Here is a photo of where they are located (click on the photo to blow it up):

The red arrow is pointing to the 10mm bolt with fat washer.

The yellow arrow is pointing to the point at which the two metal parts of the pushrod are joined. Be sure to mark this spot with some nail polish or paint so that you have your original starting overall length set.

The effect on the leading edge of the top achieved by lengthening the pushrods is NOT linear, so be careful. At a certain point, the leading edge of the top will start to retract from its maximum forward position.

Once you get close to the distance you want, use the plastic ball cups to make a finer adjustment.

Regards, Maurice.

Maurice that's fantastic, interestingly when I watch the hood meet the windscreen frame it comes up to it and then moves back slightly, I'll look at it tomorrow.

Porsche updated the two little pegs on the front edge of the convertible top that go into the windshield. See the TSB "Rattling Noises From the Cabriolet Top". The updated part number is 986 561 605 01 A09. I found a lot of the rattling and groaning noise from my convertible top went away when I swapped in these in my 2001 2.7, and they weren't very expensive

Tim:

It looks like your pushrods may be set just past the point where they end up placing the leading edge in the maximum forward position.

Make a fine adjustment in both directions and see which way starts to yield an improvement in the final position.
