My, new to me, 2006 Carrera 4S, displays the cut-out message anytime the car is re-started and the radio is selected ON. The dealer did a PCM re-set and tried to install a NAV DVD but if fails to load due to the power interruption of the cut out protection. I did noticed if you re-start the radio two or three times, it then stays ON and works ok. (No NAV). Today the dealer re checked and said I need a new PCM. I had read a thread that for a similar problem a reset and proper CD/DVD install resolved the issue. The PCM was quoted at $1700 plus two labor hours at $145. PLUS I would then need to get the correct nav CD/DVD from 888-NAV-MAPS.

My questions;

(1) Has anyone experienced this?

(2) Is the PCM - the radio unit?

(3) Can I install a later version PCM? 3.0?

any advised is welcomed....

Haven't experienced myself so can't help you there.

PCM is the radio, trip computer, CD player, etc...

That's a good question to which my initial response would be no because Porsche has a history of changing just enough stuff with each new model to make upgrading things difficult, or next to impossible. However, the folks at Suncoast Porsche are very good about giving you a straight story when it comes to these kinds of things and frankly might be able to save you some $$ on the PCM itself. I'd give 'em a ring, tell 'em your problem and they should be able to answer all your questions definitively.

Is the cooling fan in the rear of the unit operating correctly? The dealers seem quick to just replace things without investigating the problem or other options.

Definitely check your navigation disc version. I have seen this error in cars that were recently sold and the seller sticks a random nav disc they have lying around into the DVD drive. When you get the correct disc I would advise pulling the fuse for the PCM to reset it and the insert the correct nav disc into the DVD drive up front. That should take care of your issue.

You need to figure out what software version your PCM is to tell what nav disc your need. You'll need to press the main and trip buttons at the same time to display that. Also there is usually a date printed on the nav disc itself, what does yours say? Once you figure out what version you need I may have a extra disc that I can get your for way cheaper than what a new one would cost you.

As suggested you need to check the navigation and PCM software versions are compatable and the disc is correct for the software versions. Start by pressing the MAIN and TRIP buttons together and then write down the software version displayed on the top header bar and then select each of the displayed components to reveal its individual actual and target software. If you can post these back on hte forum we can give you a better idea of where the problem may lie. To reset the PCM/ NAV you can either remove the fuse or press 1 , 4 and 8 buttons simultaneously.

If it gets to the point of replacing the PCM , you would be better to consider an aftermarket head unit with navigation from Kenwood or Pioneer. Not only are the navigation updates cheaper and more readily available , but the unit will have bluetooth connectivity and MP3 functions already built in , rather than expensive add ons as with the PCM. With aftermarket fascias available and custom welcome screens , its easy to get a very authentic looking install that woul fool all but the porsche techs.

RIGHT ON. Pulled the fuse and inserted the 4.2005 DVD and voala'. works as designed. I found great info on several technical bulletins from the download section. Thanks to all for your assistance.

Resurrecting this one as I have exactly the same problem!

I've tried (with no luck):

- resetting the pcm

- pulling two fuses 9+10

Given the original posters issue was resolved by a new nav disc can anyone advise what disc I should have??

I have a 2005 carrera s 911 (997)

Some more info on the Nav disc that I have and the pcm software version details:

My nav disc says: for use only with external DVD-navigation unit 10.2004

997.642.235.03

7L5.919.859.F

When pressing trip and main on PCM it says SW versions 1.0

PCM target + actual: 04202JD1 / 3004

System software target+actual: 04113AD1/1104

Amplifier target+actual: 00017500/3504

CD changer target+actual: C38/3003

Nav system: (no target presumably because disc was removed?)

Navy target: 00174156/2704

Phone target+actual: 04464AD2/4604
