I'm purchasing a 2007 GT3 with 3,500 miles. During inspection a Crankshaft seal oil leak was discovered. Its being fixed under warranty. Is this common? Porsche had to tear the engine down. And its taking 2 weeks to fix. Anyone have a similiar experience or advice? Why the leak with only 3500 miles?

:welcome:

I would not call it common but it is not unheard of.

Many thinks can cause an oil seal to leak. Defective seal, drying of the seal because of non use, over filling the car with oil, etc.

Since it is being fixed under warranty there will be a record at Porsche should anything come up in the future and the repair should have the remainder of the cars current warranty or a 2 year warranty on the work performed.

Rear main seal leaks on GT3's are somewhat common, not a suprise to see. I have also seen the front seal leak (pulley side), but much fewer of those. Each can be replaced with the engine in the car so I don't know why they would be tearing the engine down. And two weeks sounds unusually long, unless they are waiting for parts from Germany.... which I doubt because parts are usually shipped VOR for an issue like that, which would only take a couple days from Germany, or next day from the US parts depots.

I was told some parts were delayed because of the Volcano. And then it took longer than it should have for the timing schematic. Does this make sense? I know very little about Porsches. You think they could have built a car in 2 weeks.
