2003 996 Cab

The battery in my key fob went dead. I changed the battery. The key fob does not remotely unlock/lock the doors at this time.

Does anyone know how to reprogram the key fob?

Thank you for your help in advance.

As stated here before you will need:

All working keys (with good batteries)

Any new keys with their 40 digit unique number tag

Your car's (by VIN) unique IPAS codes (get there from your dealer after proof of ownership)

a PST2 or PIWIS tester to do the programming.

If you have everything together a 'good dealer' or 'good shop' would charge you only about 1 hour labor to do this.

Loren, is there any way to re-activate an old key if the number on it is no longer readable?

When I bought the car three years ago, it had two keys. Both unlocked and started the car, but only one had the keyless entry electronics inside of it and it didn't work. I took it back to the place I bought the car about a month later asking them to fix the keyless entry and only took the key with electronic guts. They said they were unable to relflash it and ended up charging me about $240 to stick the blade on a new keyhead.

I didn't realize until recently that my spare key no longer starts the car. Is there a way to reactivate it with my PST-2 or am I stuck buying a new keyhead?

Whether I can reactivate the old key or have to buy a new keyhead, how do I make sure neither key gets erased from the system when I program them? Does the PST-2 have very clear directions or do I need to read up on this first?

Thanks.

If it is an original key then the dealer might be able to look it up. Otherwise I am afraid not.

Yes, the instructions for programming keys is in the 996 Technical Service Manual - and I think I may have posted them here also.

Loren,

I bought a Carrera GT key head from a dealer, but it didn't come with the key code tag... The dealer I purchased from is pretty clueless- do you think they should be able to look up the key number needed?

I need to reprogram the key, not just swap the guts as my key fob is dead...

Thanks!

Transfer the metal key and the immobilizer pill - then see if it works.

If it does not then have them use your old key number to program the new key.

I'm confused- how can they use my old key number for new key, and new key electronics? Also, will they be able to determine the old key number using PWIS?

Thanks for your help

First try what I suggested.

As I understand it the key number is not needed if you are using the same immobilizer pill. The immobilizer would already have that number and all you are doing is re-synching the the old key (in a new housing).

Loren,

but it didn't come with the key code tag...

Thanks!

your remote buttons on a newly bought key will not work ever (your dealer is either pretending he doesnt know or he is not a Porsche dealer). so you now have new plastic shell with metal blade and immo pill (unrelated to remote electronics). metal blade on newly bought key has been cut for another car so you can through it away. pill could be used but you also have a pill in the old key which is already mated to your car's immobilizer. so you now can do the following:

1. put old pill and old blade into new plastic case (remote will not work)

2. put old blade into new plastic, take key to dealer and ask him to mate new immo pill to car's immobilizer (remote will not work)

Sunset is telling me that the CGT key does not come with the code tag- and that the CGT is programmed differently than the 996...

Can anyone confirm that the CGT key does not come with a key code tag?

Just so everyone is clear on what really happens when a key is mated to a car .... the 996 key heads are not programmed. They always produce the same signal, the one created by the transponder capsule in the key head. It is the car's immobilizer computer that is programed to recognize the key head. This is why the bar code tag that comes with a key head (not with a key shaft) is necessary in order to perform the mating, along with a car specific code that only Porsche has access to.

I believe each car computer can recognize a maximum of five key heads.
