I replaced my water pump in two boxsters I have with one ordered from Duetsche Parts.

One has failed with <2 months of driving on it -- probably less than 1000 miles.

Shaft seized -- pulley ripped off by new belt. Hopefully that was all the damage that was done!

Can anyone recommend a reliable source for reasonably priced water pumps?

Just get the OEM one form Sunset or Suncoast. Not worth the headache for a few bucks IMHO. A lot of crap on E Bay...

It was supposed to be new.

We disassembled it and found the shaft wobbled.

I had 4 of them -- they are now trophies.

Cleaned out sunset last week.

Just had the same exact thing happen to me. Bought a water pump from Duetsche Parts for my 2004 996 C4S and the pulley was ripped off by the belt. What a mess, shredded the belt and left me stranded on the side of the road. I learned my lesson. The only reason I bought it was because of the metal impeller. What's the use of a metal impeller when the bearing will fail within 2,000 miles.

I ad exact same issue in my 99 carrera..deutsche parts pump failed after about 1500miles..I also only bought it because of the metal impeller which was recommended on some youtube videos.

The lesson I learned: not worth saving a few bucks on el cheapo aftermarket parts promising that "made in Germany"=good quality...bought genuine Porsche part now and will install next week.. Will never buy aftermarket rubbish again...now I have to do the job again.

You should never, repeat never, use a pump with a metal impeller in the M96/97 engine. When the bearing goes, and it will, the metal impeller can chew the Hell out of the engine case, possibly ruining it. Stay with the OEM pumps with composite impellers only...............

Also stay away from the brand "Laso". They make a similar plastic composite pump, but the one I had started separating after just 200 miles. The new Porsche OE pump is still going strong over 3000 miles later (of course, the original pump lasted 72k). ;)

I used a NAPA sourced rebuilt OEM pump, with no problems after 20k miles - it had a plastic impeller. I've found that reputable domestic aftermarket manufacturers like NAPA and Moog to be a good source for quality parts, and way, way cheaper than OEM. It's the same stuff I've been using since I started working on cars back in high school. They usually offer a lifetime warranty, and that's the part I get. No problems so far.

Just priced a OEM Water pump with gasket, thermostat with gasket for $282.89 from sunset porsche. I try to stick with OEM when it's and engine part..

If you switch to a metal impeller, you need to switch to a hybrid silicated coolant too...later Porsche coolant aka VW G-12++, BMW (iirc) MB/Zerex...

Only silicates can react quickly enough to recoat the hard parts from pump cavitation. Google the MOTOR Magazine article, Coolant Confusion.

Early Porsche coolant is just Dexcool....

It wasn't worth arguing with my mechanic over, but it is, for sure G-12/Dexcool/Dexclone Organic Acid Tech coolant.
