Often caused by a battery/alternator issue; check your battery voltage engine off and running. Should be around 12.5V or so off, at least 14.4V running. If either is low, you have an issue..............

The fact that your CEL light went off is a good thing. Check the CEL light on start-up. Turn your key and see if the CEL illuminates before you crank your engine and then after start-up the light goes out. That way you know the CEL bulb is not at fault.

CEL light comes on when ignition is switched on and goes of immediately.I have some fault codes from a private garage diagnostic box but nothing points towards these two lights.I'm thinking of changing variocam solenoid and spark plug coils but would like to pin point something first

Checked charging a while ago and it was intermittent so changed alternator.Have checked it several times since and charging rate is fine.

Fault codes - fault codes - fault codes... everything is a guess without them.

I have a list of fault 'P'codes 1602,1531 1340 1319 1313 1314 1315 these seem to point towards cam adustment and missfires on 1,2 and 6 cylinder, but i'm a tad confused as to why this would bring on the ABS and battery light?

P1602 Voltage Supply.

Are you sure your battery is good and when the car is running you are over 14 volts.

Clear the codes and if the P1602 comes back again you have a battery or charging problem. (you may also still have a cam or chain problem).

Battery is old (3yrs plus)but is showing 11.38 volts static and 14.24 volts running. The last couple of engine starts the ABS light went off but came on within a few seconds. I have heard that the MAF sensor may give an ABS light, this sounds odd!!

I would get a new battery.

You could always take it out and take it a parts store and have it load tested and the specific gravity of each cell tested - but I think in the end you will need anew battery.

11.38 open circuit volts is a failed battery or a battery that is very, very low on charge. Replace the unit as it's already three years old and remove it as a fault out of the equation.

New battery fitted this morning. No change.Went for a short drive also.Battery is reading good.I'm starting to pull my hair out!!! Its an odd fault.Appreciate all the help.

Have you cleared the old fault codes and rechecked for any that might have returned? How does the ignition switch feel.... they can cause odd faults.

No havent cleared fault codes as yet.Igniton switch feels as normal.Noticed that after swithing engine off theres is a very quiet buzz from the engine compartment for about 2 seconds.I have engine compartment insulation removed at the moment which is probably why i haven't heard this before. My MOT has expired and with ABS light it will not pass MOT (The UK ministry of transport annual test)
