multiple Codes issue(Catalytic Converters and Radio/Alarm/cluster issue)

Catalytic Converters and linked Radio/Alarm issue

I originally had a CEL which provided the following P0420, P0430, P1601, 9114 PCM, Alarm I32, showing subcodes 54( Radio) and 33( Interior sensor). 2003 base Boxster 5spd manual with 19000 miles. My radio is CDR23 with option 680 highend bose digital amp. 1) Whenever the Key is turned on the Radio starts up Flashing “Porsche” and making sounds like it is trying to load a CD and it goes back and forth through this sequence – it is impossible to control the unit at all, had to pull fuse to stop it. I sent the CDR23 head unit off to Becker Radio for repair and it is in perfect working order. I now believe that the cluster code and alarm and radio are linked but unsure if the alarm and radio are causing PCM and 1601 codes. Doesn’t PCM mean that you have the Navigation system? Mine never did have it as an option. At the same time I went to update the computer via Durametric cable to activate the OBC – the unit says “Cannot communicate with the Cluster. Any ideas on what to do, I have the Bentley manual but no wiring diagram is available for my 2003 model! 2) the cats originally showed up as codes P0420 and P0430. After giving the car a good run the P0430 code was dropped and the CEL also turned off. The car had not been used much in the last few years. Thanks for advice and curious to know if this is sufficient to claim cats under emission warranty which is good till 8 yrs or Oct 2010. Thanks Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I had the Alarm Code 33 as well. My alarm would go off at all times of the day and night. The Fault Code 33 can always be read by the Durametric Tool. It shows if the fault is present and also is a counter as shown in the freguency counter number immediately following.

I replaced the infared interior sensor (located by the center top interior light/switch) from Sunset Porsche and all is well. Very easy to replace and took less than 30 minutes. If you take off your visors, be careful in removing and re-installing (don't overtighten) the two torx screws on outer sides, as once stripped, you will need to replace the receiving nut with new nut rivets with a pop rivet tool. Besides the visors the screws also provide support for your soft/hard top.

If the CEL is off that is a good thing. I would just keep an eye one it though.

If Becker sent you a new/rebuilt CDR23 (which is likely) it will need to be matched with the DME and alarm system.

These need to be synch'ed with a PST2 or PIWIS - I don't think Durametric can do that.

Make sure you have the latest Durametric software.

Where are you located?

Thanks guys, just for the record, the interior sensor is working perfectly, I set the alarm while sitting in the car and it becomes active after the alarm flashes much slower. Also, the radio was checked over by Becker and it was not faulty and returned with new knobs atleast. I hooked up my durametric and reset all my codes, it cleared up all except the alarm code area. I tried once again (have beta vers 6.0) to activate the OBC and no go, says it can't communicate with the cluster? I heard some others had issues with 03 or 04 models. When I open the door of the car the instrument cluster lights up and my radio attempts to turn on and flashes porsche and makes motor sounds like its trying to load a CD. It also displays this behavior when the car is running. Only choice is take fuse out or fix it. When I tried to add the connectors at the back of the radio one at a time, it is the larger black connector that houses the power and must be receiving intermittant power signals because the unit keeps trying to turn on and off it seems. Very frutstrating because I have the highend bose Digital amp system and don't know what it sounds like yet!

Check your DME to see if the orderl type is set. Many 2003 and 2004 cars came from the factory without this set - and you can not program or change the programs without it being properly set.

This is for a 996 - but you get the idea.

My 2003 was an early production model and has the following info:

My order number is set to 986310 see attached dme info from Durametric.

I wish someone else with 2003 or 2004 model could chime in here.

Appreciate the input and ideas.

If the order type is set then you should be able to change it.

I have done this on a dozen or so cars.

Loren,

so you were able to use the Durametric tool with the beta 6.0 software to set the OBC on 2003 boxster's correct?

If so, what on earth could be wrong with mine (I updated the drivers twice to make sure), it says it cannot communicate with the cluster? I am thinking that this again plays back to my radio issue which continually turns on and off when I open the door, or run the car. Its nice that it shows PORSCHE every few seconds just to remind me of what car I bought cursing.gif . Last night I had to pull the fuse on the radio again, cuz after awhile.....

I guess I will recheck my codes in a couple of days and start this process over.

I have not tried setting that with the Durametric.

I have a PST2 and a PIWIS so I use them most of the time.

Loren,

Thanks for the confirmation, if you would be so kind as to outline the exact procedure using that tool to update my OBC, I would much appreciate it. I have heard of many people not being able to update these model years on the 1st try. Too bad I am way out here in Michigan! I Recently joined the PCA and hopefully will find out who has a PST2 through them.

Also, since you have that tool, could you please comment on using it to update my DME to the ROW Map. I understand that the Euro spec cars don't have the 2nd set of O2 sensors (do they have 2 sets of Cats like us or are their exhausts different too?). I would like to add Straight headers (like Turbowerx or NHP,not sure which is better) since my primary cats are failing and setting off codes periodically.

Thanks

Bruce

I would have to do it again to remember the exact sequence but here is what I recall.

Make sure the order type is set in the DME. If it is not then set it - exit PST2 - turn the car off. Reconnect.

Set the OBC on in the cluster (2 places - I can't recall - perhaps one in the DME too).

Depending on what where you live you may not want to defeat emissions stuff - in the US there are federal laws about that (racing is exempt).

It can be done with IPAS codes and a PST2 or PIWIS tester. Takes about 30 minutes.

Thanks again, I will hang on to this info. Here in Michigan there are not tests done, but if I retain the Main cats that are downstream I assume that my exhaust will remain clean regardless if I use the headers or not(like the early 986's). I also assume that if necessary I could revert back to standard US map at a later point if I needed to.
