Upgrade Shifter Console From 986 To 997 Wow!

If you have $180.00 to invest and want to do a great mod to you 986, go for the 997 shifter console P/N 997-424-010-00. What a change!!! Very shorter throw. They claim 15% I feel 25% easy... With that plug & play mod done (took 45 minutes), I have the feeling to drive a new car! If you have that kind of money, don't hesitate!

If you want to take it a notch further, the factory 997 sport shifter (997.424.983.00 I believe) is incredible. It came on my car and it's just awesome. I don't know how it compares to aftermarket like B&M, but I'll never have a P-car without it again. :)

From my research, they're the same piece, just P-branded for the OEM setup.

The part number I quoted is for a six-speed, so if you have a base Boxster it will not work.

The 987 base has a 5-speed box, and the stock part is likely a shorter throw than yours. It should work just fine with your car.

The 996 and 997 OEM short shifters are different products. The 996 short shifter was a rebranded B&M shifter in a shifter housing; the 997 short shifter is a Porsche manufactured product and works smoother. I believe the shifters with housings are fully interchangeable between the 9x6 and 9x7 model lines

I stand corrected! Thanks for the great info. Funny, I think I read that post awhile ago and it never occurred to me that you were swapping in the 6-speed part in a 5-speed car. :)

The shifter doesn't distinguish between transmission or number of forward gears, that's a function of the transmission itself. As long as the shifter housing bolts in properly and has the pivot point in the right position, it looks like any of the 9x6 or 9x7 shifters will work with any manual transmission

Our 986's are 5 years older now; my 2000S has 62,000 miles on the clock and has been shifting poorly for some time. It had second gear popouts when cold, notchy shifts everywhere else. I changed the motor mount to some effect, but the mount wasn't completely degraded like some of that age, so the difference wasn't huge. I then changed the transmission fluid since it was 15 years old, but I didn't notice any difference in the shifting. I finally decided to upgrade to the 997 shifter and man, it shifts better than it did when I bought it with 8000 miles on it. UPGRADE TO THE 997 SHIFTER IF YOU HAVE A 986! That is all...
