On occasion, and usually when I start the car cold, I'll get a burst of blue smoke. After the initial burst, it goes away and it may be ten starts before it happens again. No smoke while running. Again, this happens only occasionally. I assume that bit of oil is getting by the rings, but why only once in a while? Any ideas? Some have suggested a failing AOS, whatever that is.

Thanks. 97 Boxster, 79,000 trouble free miles (so far)

Do a search here..Discussed many times. It happens regularly on P cars. If it does not persist, probably nothing to worry about. Many times depends on how you drive prior to turning the key off...Normal.

Thanks, DC. I'll keep an eye on it to see if issue worsens.

I just wanted to second what DC said: this is a common but benign characteristic of boxer motors. A tiny bit of oil seeps in and pools in the cylinders if the engine's been sitting awhile, so you get a blue puff when you first light it off.

I've owned Porsches for every day of the past 34 years and counting and in my experience virtually all the flat sixes seem to do it. Look at it as one more endearing quirk. Cheers!
