955.573.111.04 Condenser -- US MSRP $376.85

Porsche calls it desiccator and in this case it is part of the condensor - one each per car.

According to the diagram it is part of the part number I gave you. Item 1 is the whole condenser assembly and item 2 is the desiccator.

Ooops it looks like Loren posted the wrong picture. That is a picture of the condenser. The desiccator basically acts as the drier for the refrigerant.

Anyhow replacing the evaporator is is a serious beast of a job. Probably the worst thing I've ever had to do on a Cayenne. The evaporator is sandwiched inside the heating and air conditioning unit behind the dashboard on the passenger side. If you want to see the innards of a Cayenne, replace the evaporator. Thankfully they very rarely fail. You may want to consider replacing the Orings on both sides of the expansion valve as I've seen a leaking o ring there that looked a lot like a bad evaporator. See how it goes from there, it could save you a SERIOUS headache.

I would get a second opinion. Evaporators rarely fail and even though you can smell it inside the vehicle it might be pulling it in through the cabin air intake. The best route is to recover the freon charge and pressurize the system with nitrogen to test for leaks. There are many places for this system to leak and in my experience the evap core is misdiagnosed 99% of the time. You can also have a trace dye put into the system to find the leaks.

Hi if you can could you tell me location of th expansion valve. I did find some oil residue in the smaller pipe that goes in the firewall i was able to give half a turn to the bolt. I pull vacum to 29 in 10 minutes and it held. I will check the o rings you suggested as soon as i could find the valve. Thanks a bunch.

Not knowing what a fully functioning factory evaporator was like before it sprung a leak, the replacement Griffiths works just fine. Is one better than the other, dunno.

What is clear is that the Griffiths evap I put in earlier this year is working just fine and seems to cool the cabin down pretty fast. No tinted windows and a black interior certainly adds to the challenge.
