looking for stereo head unit replacement instructions

Hi everyone

I'm getting my first Porsche next month, a 2002 Boxster S. Since it will be my daily driver for the summer, I'm going to definitely need to update the stereo so I can attach my Ipod. I've searched the forums and I've figured that I need to pick up a pair of the stereo removal pins, a Metra 70-1787 harness and a radio antenna adapter. I think I'm going to get a Pioneer head unit with the front USB port, and I'd like to attach this to the factory amp/speakers. Maybe later on I'll replace the speakers, and then maybe the amp. A couple of questions:

1) Do I need a faceplate adapter, or will a regular single DIN head unit fit perfectly? My previous car needed one.

2) I've searched all over the forums and can't seem to find any step-by-step instructions. Does anyone know if there are some simple step-by-step instructions that would tell me exactly how to remove and replace the head unit? I've only done it once before for my previous car and it was a very simple plug and play process. I'm just wondering if it is as simple with the 986 using the 1787 harness? I found the instruction for the post-2003 models, but I guess it should be easier for the pre-MOST stereos?

If I posted this in the wrong forum, please let me know.

Hello,

It is very easy to put in a deck in your car. Being a professional installer for 6 years (Best Buy and once Circuit City), a 2000 honda civic is harder to do than the porsch.

First of all, you do not need any extra parts except an antenna adapter and the VW/ Porsch amplified harness (get it from Metra).

This is what you have to do

-Pull out the deck using the Keys

-Wire up the harness (make sure you TEST the constant wire vs the ACC wire, if i remember correctly, they may be reversed on the harness)

-plug in the antenna adapter

-mount your cage (yes the fit is very tight)

-Slide in the deck

-turn on your car !!!

Your done!

ohh and by the way, this is for the standard system, I do believe the Bose may be different wiring, but similar.

I got the removal keys from ebay.

I found the radio very 'stiff' to pull out. Make sure u are pulling the radio out level (horizontally) or with maybe a slight downward angle or it won't budge. It took me quite a few tries, a few cuss words and sore fingers to get it to come out. I swear I was going to break it with all the tugging I did.... I think the angle of the tug is the most important...

This was to get the aux becker cable into the back of my cdr-220 so I could ipod/iphone my tunes.

Just a question, how much did you get that becker cable for?

If it was over $100, its better to just put a new deck in the car. It would provide better sound and give you more function then you would get with the becker.

it was under $20US inc. shipping to Canada... I got it on ebay.. Blaupunkt /becker cables work with the CDR220

so i was able to install the new head unit easily enough - thanks for the tips. the new unit didn't slide in very easily and i had to hammer in the sides a bit to squeeze it in.

however, in my haste to install the new unit, i forgot to remove a cd from the original Becker unit. does anyone know if it is possible to remove a cd from the becker unit without reinstalling it?

If you know the pin configuration and secret code for the receiver, you can probably just wire it straight up to the battery to turn it on and pop out the CD.

Alternatively, most car stereo shops have a rig setup to do something similar, you will still need the radio code though.

i actually had to pull out the new unit, so i just plugged the old one in to power it up and got the cd out.

i'm having the issue with the alarming giving the alert when arming because the new unit isn't attached to the alarm system. i searched some posts and found that there is a black cable that is supposed to be attached. i opened it up and can't seem to find this cable. not a really big deal to me, but wouldn't mind fixing it if anyone can suggest a link with pics or can describe how to do so.

i was actually having problems with the stereo - it wouldn't save the stereo presets when the car was turned off. it turns out that the constant 12V and the ignition 12V leads on the Metra 1787 harness were reversed. After I tried switching them (so now, red to yellow and yellow to red) it seems to work appropriately.

haven't bothered to fix the alarm sensor wire yet. may do it later.
