Wind noise from Roof Transport System (Roof Rack)

I just installed the roof transport system on the Cayenne S. I can't believe how much wind noise it produces over 65MPH. Is there some sort of wind deflector I can but to keep the noise down? It's very irritating!

I am not sure I know what you are referring to but I attached a picture of what I have now. I used to have the side rails but I swapped it the transport system. I got it used and all it came with are the 2 bars w/ lock and a key.

Is it the section where the yellow highlight is or the white highlight?

It is the yellow marked zone, the seal must be placed in the grooves when unused, to combat the whistle (wind noise).

Yes the seal is there on both bars yet I still get lots of wind noise.

I will hope that the bars are installed in the right direction, the small car emblem on the side (lock) parts should be in the same direction of the car. A little wind noise is normal, but it should not be exaggerated.

That I'm not sure as the previous onwer installed it for me. I will check later. Hope that is the cause of the wind noise. Thanks!

I heard from someone that the bars have to be pushed close together twards the back when not in use. It looks kinda ugly like that tho.

I have the same problem with my 04CTT. I tried moving them to the back together but you can still hear the noise (plus I agree with you that it is a pretty ugly solution). I eventualy got use to the noise. Not much you can do with the law of physics.

If this is any consolation, imagine it that it is like living with a supermodel that snores, only you and hopefully a few others knows that she snores :)

Well one was installed backwards. I fixed it but wont be able to tell until this weekend. Crossing my fingers.

I drove it today and went all the way up to 80MPH and the noise is barely noticeable.

Does anyone know where I can buy the rubber strips for the roof system that were referenced earlier in this thread. I bought my racks used along with a Porsche (Thule like) cargo carrier and they did not come with the rubber strips. Without the strips the noise is pretty loud at the moment.

The strips are delivered with the system, a small chance that you can buy them separately, as far i know Porsche. Contact a dealer to be sure.

Hello - I just found this forum via the Google. Over the summer I bought a Roof Transport System for my 996 and I'm getting ready for my first ski trip with it. First test drive it whistled like crazy - just an unreasonable amount of noise. It started whistling at around 30 mph and at speed It sounded like I had a dozen boiling tea kettles on my roof. I did check the orientation of the racks as suggested by RFM, but that wasn't it.

I do have the rubber strips that came with the cross beams. The ski carrier instructions make no mention these rubber strips at all. I guess you're supposed to chop them up into segments to fill the voids in the cross beams, but I'm a little reluctant to do that. Eventually I want to get a road bike carrier also, and I don't know if the gap lengths would be the same, and I haven't yet checked to see how available those rubber strips are.

So for now I've covered the slots with gaffer's tape, and it eliminated about 90% of the whistle. There is still some noise from the ski carrier itself, but that's to be expected.

I have found that the whistler noise in a proper installed roof transport system comes from the bar upper grooves. This noise is much increased when you install the ski rack over the bars. The solution is to install the provided molding rubber bar in the groove. If you have installed the ski rack you need to install a shorter rubber piece between the two ski rack support. In my case this solved the problem.
