1998 Boxster (986) - 118,000 miles

Started car this evening and that was my first mistake!

  • Battery and ABS lights stayed on and steering was immediately heavy
  • Drove off, after a while I noticed that stopped at a traffic light the engine was idling much higher than normal
  • Further down the road the oil temp gauge went all the way to the right and the gauge red light came on
  • I stopped, and couldn't restart the engine.

These seem like a lot of weird things to be happening at the same time??

Any ideas - I'm getting it towed to the dealer tomorrow, but if it's something simple then ...?

|Many thanks,

Bob

I would check the multi-V belt if i was you, looks like a broken belt from some reason.

Sounds like the belt from the front of the engine is not tight or is broken. The belt is pulling the water pump, assisted stering and alternator.

I hope the engine did not got too hot.

Good luck

Thanks guys - don't suppose there's any info/photos on how to get to the belt?

Remove the carpet and then the panel behind the seats. You just need a screwdriver and a 10 metric wrench.

Here is a picture of the access panel behind the seat carpet.

I can't seem to get the picture to show up. However I just happen to have the cover off and can take pictures tomorrow evening when I'm back in town. Just let me know what you need.

Might also want to check that the water pump, alternator, P/S pump, or A/C compressor have not seized. Seized accessory unit can be one reason for V-belt failure...
