Cabin Air Filter 2004 S


Okay folks... Here's what I did to replace the cabin air filter in my 2004 Cayenne S One oddity I discovered is that the two screws holding the filter box access panel in place are not a standard size. 5mm and 6mm do not fit. 5 is too small and 6 is too big. Same thing with 3/16 and 1/4 in nut drivers. These are what I will call the Porsche Metric system Since I didn't have the correct size driver to remove the two screws I used an ugly pair of pliers as seen in the first image. Thanks to the

First time I ever had to use my 5.5mm was on the cabin filter, all these years of pulling wrenches I never came across this size before.

This is probably a stupid question--but if the access screws are 5.5mm hex head screws--what is the T20 torx driver used for?

I found the answer--the T20 is used to remove the access cover that you need to remove in order to gain access to the "access cover" that is held by the 5.5mm screws.

Yes, the new tutorial software allows me to 'Make a Tutorial" from a post. This seemed like a good candidate. Thanks for posting it.

I wanted to add a reply that I did the filter replacement on my '05 Cayenne S yesterday and it worked like a charm - thanks to this thread! I didn't have any issues, and if I didn't know about the Torx wrench and the 5.5mm socket, it would have taken me longer than 5 minutes. Thanks again for posting the pics!

Did my cabin filter this morning on my 2004 S.....worked like a charm. Thanks Rizzo!

In fact I even had a 5.5 mm that I bought many years ago.....I think this is the first time I've used it as well!!

I'm assuming this is the first time the filter has been changed.....It was REALLY filthy! Lots of dust and dirt.

Do you have a part number for cabin air filter? any suggestion where I can buy?

Amazon - MANN filter - $16.00 (identical to what came out of mine, except for all the leaves and crap on the intake side.. :) )

BTW, I spent about 4 hours looking for a source of a 5.5mm wrench/socket/driver. NAPA has one in their catalog, but no stores stock them. Harbor Freight - no good. Lowes tool department - no good. Sears lists them on-line, not in the store that I could find.

I finally used pliers (GASP!) - got them out and threw the 5.5mm's as far away as I could after rummaging through my big tray of self-tap screws to find some real ones with the same thread pitch/size. Found some that take a 5/16" nut driver. And I have LOTS of 5/16" nut drivers kicking around.

SWMBO asked why Porsche used such an odd size.. and I was unable to come up with a good reason. ALL the counter guys gave me the fish-eye when I asked about 5.5mm drivers/sockets. They didn't actually believe they existed.

Porsche made it VERY easy to get to the 5.5mm screws, and then impossible to remove them. Go figure.

Sears ($5.99) and Autozone ($3.29) both sell the 5.5 mm socket. Actually fairly common for German car interior fasteners.

I did stop at AutoZone on the way home last night (wanted to get some other items anyway..) and they not only have a standard length 1/4" drive 5.5mm ($2.75 or so..) they have a deep one (that must be the $3.29 one). Bought the standard length. Now I have to dig around and try to find the screws.. :censored:

Stumbled on this topic while researching the Coolant Tube DIY.

Geez guys, 7/32 works just fine in place of 5.5. Pretty sure all my 1/4" drive kits come with it.

7/32 = 5.5563mm

I made up a couple of conversion charts (1 for torque and 1 for size) that I keep taped to the lid of my tool chest, they come in handy. I'll try to attach them here.

Called all around to find the filter nearby.

Autozone. None

Advanced. None

Oreillys. None

Napa. None

Went to the local VW dealer and they had one.

$33 though. :(
