just purchased a '99 C2 and have addressed several of the "common" issues, BUT

VIN# WP0AA2990XS620263

The fuel gauge drops dramatically for the first 1/4 - 1/2 tank - then levels out.

ex: drive at moderate highway speed @78 MPH

25 miles=1/8 tank used (200 miles per tank)

65 miles=1/4 tank used (260 miles per tank)

115 miles=3/8 tank used (306 miles per tanK)

I am getting approximately 23-24 mpg on the highway over the course of an entire tank. (375-400 miles)

Is there a fix? And is it covered under the

"Recall 00V109000 - Incorrect Fuel Level Displayed"

Thanks

The recall was for C4's only. They have a much different gas tank because of the 4WD.

Your problem sounds like a sticky float/sender. I would try some Techron or other fuel system cleaner first. If you live in a cold climate you could have moisture (water) in the tank so a gas dryer might be appropriate also.

I don't know how you get that kind of mileage; my '04 C4S cab gets only about 220 miles per tankful, averaging 16.5 mpg at best. I know the C4S tank hold a little less gas than the regular 996, but if I were you I wouldn't worry too much about the interim displays, as long as you know how much fuel is left.

Sounds alright to me. My 996 C2 does the same. Gas mileage is a little less than I get. BEFORE my supercharger, I got 27 MPH average on the highway (consistantly over a 3500 mile trip at speeds averaging 85 mph). Around town I got above 22. I will be making that same trip in a few weeks with the supercharged engine and we will have to see what difference the extra boost will make in gas mileage.

Loren:

Where can I get Techtron and how much to put in the tank, also what gas dryer you recommend? Although I live in Miami think that the change in temperature, very high humidity here, and in what we floridians consider winter my cause a bit of water in the tank.

I have a similar problem with MY99 Coupe, C2, 6 speed standard. Won't show 100% full, after filling up it shows about 1/16 short of 4/4, then the gauge drops very fast during the 1st 30 miles after fillup, stays in 1/2 tank for a long while. I'm getting aprox 220 miles per full tank in the city. Have never let it shows low gas alarm.

You can get Techron at Costco, Walmart, or many auto parts houses. And, of course you can buy it at Chevron gas stations.
